Practicum experiences are an effective way in which nursing students develop the required knowledge and skills for patient care. This week’s experiences have contributed immensely to my personal and professional growth. One of the experiences that have influenced my development is interprofessional collaboration. The staff in the Advance Care Center and Optomitrist office values the utilization of interprofessional collaboration to achieve optimum care outcomes. They collaborate in assessing, planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating patient care. They also embrace the principles of dynamic teamwork to enhance innovation in the patient care process (Homeyer et al., 2018). My participation in interprofessional care has strengthened my teamwork and communication skills.

In my view, interprofessional collaboration and teamwork are important in healthcare. Their use contributes to the care outcomes that include safety, quality, and efficiency in the patient care process. Nurses have crucial roles in promoting interprofessional collaboration and teamwork. They engage in activities that address barriers to teamwork such as enhancing open communication and supporting patient safety culture (Tang et al., 2018). Healthcare institutions should encourage teamwork and interprofessional collaboration by enhancing trust, responsibility, and transparency among their staff.

I intend to use the knowledge and skills learned from interprofessional collaboration in some ways. First, I intend to use the knowledge and skills obtained from the experience in providing patient care. I have learned about best practices that can be used in practice from participating in teamwork and interprofessional activities. I will also use the knowledge and skills gained from the experience to advocate patient safety, quality, and efficiency of care. I have learned that teamwork and interprofessional collaboration minimize errors in the patient care process (Müller et al., 2018). Therefore, I intend to utilize the experiences to inform my practice as a professional nurse for optimum care outcomes.

Bi-weekly Practicum Journaling

A personal, introspective subjective account of your practicum experience and how your practicum experience relates to Healthy People 2020 and course objectives. Include events that occurred in your practicum experience, and be sure to describe your thoughts and feelings about those events. How did your perceptions change? What did you learn that was unexpected? Describe your thinking about your thoughts and feelings regarding the new learning you experienced.
