Scope of Practice for my Future Role

My future practice role is as a nurse educator. Nurse educators are individuals trained at the master’s level to impart knowledge and skills to nursing students and the workforce. The nurse educator role constantly evolves due to the influence of emerging care needs and changes in health care. As a result, nurse educators should have the appropriate knowledge, skills, and attitudes to promote the desired competencies in nursing students and the workforce. The scope of my future role as a nurse educator is extensive. One of the areas of my scope of practice is facilitating learning. I will act as a facilitator of the learning process by providing environments that address the diverse learning needs of the learners. I will assess the learners to determine the effective learning interventions that can be incorporated into practice to optimize the learning outcomes. My scope of practice also extends to facilitating learning development and socialization. Nurse educators provide learners opportunities to identify their interests and talents in the learning process. They also create environments that promote positive socialization among nursing students and other healthcare providers(Markey &Okantey, 2019). Through it, nursing students and nurses develop the essential skills of interprofessional collaboration and communication.

My future scope of practice also entails learning strategies assessment and evaluation. The adopted learning strategies should address learners’ unique needs. Nurse educators use assessment tests to evaluate their effectiveness and propose interventions for enhancing outcomes. My scope also extends to curriculum design and evaluation. I will participate in interprofessional teams tasked with using assessment data to improve curriculums to address emerging needs in healthcare. The other aspects of my scope of practice include engaging in scholarship, acting as a change agent and leader, and promoting continuous quality improvement in nursing education (Halstead, 2018). The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredits nurse educators. The state boards of nursing of each state regulate them. The National League of Nurses certifies nurse educators.

Professional nursing organizations play crucial roles in the development of nurse educators. The three professional nursing organizations that I believe to be the most influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing in my future role include the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), National Association for Practice Nurse Education and Service (NAPNES), and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF). The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is an organization that was developed to empower all nurse practitioners to promote quality health care through advocacy, education, practice, leadership, and research. Its purpose of existence is to promote high-quality health care for all populations(AANP, n.d.). It achieves its mission and purpose by focusing on values that include integrity, excellence, professionalism, leadership, and service.

The National Association for Practical Nurse Education and Service (NAPNES) is an organization that was established to promote the continuous development of nurse practitioners and other nurses. It provides its members’ opportunities for continuous professional development through courses, study tours, workshops, and seminars. The organization ensures that its professional development opportunities equip members with the desired competencies to address current and emerging needs in their markets(NAPNES, n.d.). Through its roles, NAPNES aims to ensure safety, quality, and efficiency in professional nursing roles.

The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NOPF) is an organization that was established to promote high-quality nurse practitioner education. It leads in excellence in nurse practitioner education in not only the USA but other global nations too. The organization ensures relevance, innovativeness, and strength of nursing education to ensure its ability to address global health needs. NONPF also supports nursing educators by establishing competencies, evaluation methods, and strategic partnerships for excellence in nursing education(NONPF, n.d.).

Professional Nursing Organization I am Most Likely to Join

I am most likely to join AANP. AANP’s goals, objectives, and strategic focus align with my philosophy in nursing. I value professional aspects of the practice such as integrity, excellence, innovation, reliability, and professionalism in nursing practice. These aspects are core to AANP’s focus on service delivery to its members. AANP also focuses on all the nurse practitioners to advance quality health care through education, practice, leadership, research, and advocacy. As a result, I believe that I can benefit from networking with other nurse practitioners by being a member of AANP. Besides nursing education, I will also learn other practice aspects such as research, leadership, and advocacy, which can help me achieve my desired professional development goals. I am interested in exploring opportunities beyond those related to nursing education. For example, I would like to explore how I can use my knowledge and skills in nursing research to advance nursing education and practice. AANP will provide me the opportunity to achieve this goal (AANP, n.d.). For example, I will be able to network with nurse researchers who will guide me in exploring the incorporation of research findings into nursing education and practice. Therefore, being a member of AANP will enable me to achieve my personal and professional goals as a nurse educator.

Controversial or Evolving Issue

One of the evolving issues in nursing education that will affect nursing educator roles is technology use in nursing education. The current world witnesses an increased use of technologies in nursing education. Electronic media has provided immense opportunities for developing new teaching strategies in nursing education. The increased technology utilization in nursing education ensures the adequate preparedness of nursing students as they enter the workforce. Technologies also provide students innovative opportunities to increase their conceptual understanding and applications (Williamson & Muckle, 2018). Furthermore, it increases the accessibility to learning resources irrespective of students’ locations.

Technologies are likely to affect the nursing education role in some ways. Firstly, technology in nursing education is likely to enhance innovation and access to educational resources. Nursing students can access the learning resources they need irrespective of their locations globally. They can also learn virtually about the different care interventions and modalities using simulated learning environments (Meum et al., 2021). However, technology is likely to lower teacher-student physical interaction. Since 2020 with the outbreak of Covid19, most nursing institutions adopted virtual learning methods, which decrease the need for physical interaction between teachers and learners. The consequences include the increased possibility of ineffective teaching methods being used since virtual learning may not address the unique needs of the learners. Technology use in nursing education also increases the need for technical competence among nurse educators. Nurse educators have to enroll in educational courses that advance their knowledge and skills in nursing education (Nes et al., 2021). Therefore, nurse educators have to remain updated about new technology advancements in nursing education and ways of incorporating them into their roles. They also have to re-align their curriculums with the emerging learning needs due to technology use in nursing education.

Conclusion

My future role as an advanced practice nurse is as a nurse educator. Nurse educators have crucial roles in promoting knowledge, skill, and attitude acquisition by nursing students. Nurse educators have expanded the scope of practice that includes facilitating learning, developing and promoting socialization, incorporating the desired values to learners, assessing and evaluating learning, and curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation. Nurse educators can belong to several professional organizations for their growth and development. I am most likely to belong to the AANP, as it relates to my philosophy of nursing practice. The organization will also contribute to my personal and professional growth. Technology use in nursing education is an evolving issue that will affect nurse educator roles. Therefore, nurse educators have to explore ways of incorporating technology into their roles to promote optimum learning outcomes.
