Nurses comprise the majority of the health care workers. Besides providing quality patient care, nurses also lobby for legislation of laws. The enactment of such laws is meant to improve various aspects of the health care system, preventive and wellness measures, nursing profession issues, community welfare, and public health matters. The recommendations of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report coupled with activities of the American Nurses Association (ANA) have seen the enactment of various laws due to nursing influence and advocacy.

Smoking has adverse health effects. Nurses have been against smoking, discouraging individuals from smoking. Fathi (2020) observes that tobacco use is a leading cause of premature deaths and disability in the United States. There has been a surge inthe use of electronic cigarettes, especially among the youths. Vaping, the use of aerosols produced by e-cigarettes, has adverse health effects (Krist et al., 2021). Nurses have been proactive partners in the fight against tobacco smoking through counseling and treatment of addiction, proactive educationto patients, and advocating for changes in policies (Fathi, 2020). Nurses’ concerns about this issue have been legitimized by some states banning the use of e-cigarettes.
The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors voted to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products (Caiola, 2022). Vaping devices have also been made very expensive in other states to discourage purchase and use among younger people (McGreevy, 2021). Despite these efforts, manufacturing agencies are set to oppose these laws strongly. Nurses should continue to educate young people and the general public about the damage and effects of those tobacco products. Nurses should be relentless, unwavering, and oppose any efforts to pass laws allowing the sale of tobacco products.
