|There has been a rise in the cases of workplace violence against health care workers. An article by Gooch (2018) asserts that health care workers get injured following violence at a very alarming rate. The National Nurses United (2018) states that workplace violence is growing and a serious issue affecting health care workers, their patients, and nurses in California. Workplace violence refers to threats or acts of violence occurring at work. It involves the use or threat of physical force against a health care provider and any incidents involving dangerous weapons such as daggers and firearms, regardless of whether an individual sustains injuries or not. In the emergency department (ED), nurses and other health care providers have increased possibilities of experiencing workplace violence. Here, nurses deal with patients suffering from acute illnesses and pain, intoxicated individuals, and overly anxious relatives about their patients. Karash (2019) notes that causes of workplace violence include access to weapons, drugs, alcohol, and societal changes. D’Ettorre et al. (2018) state that other causes of workplace violence in the emergency departments include overcrowding, shortage of ED nurses, long waiting times, psychiatric comorbidities in patients, and substance abuse among individuals.
Violence against healthcare workers affects the organization and negatively impacts patient care. There is reduced productivity and quality of care by the hospital staff. There is also an increased chance of high turnover rates, lost workdays, psychological and somatic injuries experienced by nurses who continue to have fear, anxiety, and reduced job satisfaction.

Legislation is the best course for advocacy against this issue since there are no regulations to protect nurses and other health care workers who are attacked by patients or relatives seeking medical care. Most of these perpetrators of violence regard violence as part of the nurses’ job. Lack of violence prevention programs increases the risks of assaults within hospitals. The CaliforniaOccupational Safety and Health Administration (CAL/OSHA)issues guidelines to protect nurses and health care workers against violent and aggressive behaviors against them at places of work. Stronger legislation is necessary to safeguard staff working in emergency departments and reinforce the notion that violence must never be considered part of nurses’ jobs in the ED. Despite the guidelines by OSHA, there are no laws that hospitals must abide by. Therefore, there is a tendency and possibility that health care facilities might fail to adhere to the guidelines, assess risks, and support workers to prevent or deal with potential violence. This makes legislation the best course for advocacy to address workplace violence in hospital settings.|

Mary (2021) reminds us that the Bible calls us to promote social justice in several ways. Isaiah 1:17: “Learn to do good; seek justice; correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, and please the widow’s cause.”Isaiah 58:6 encourages us to break chains of injustice. The Bible motivates nurses to continue being advocates to showthe love God has for justice. By talking to leaders to accept and push for legislative changes and engaging with colleagues, nurses play an essential role in transforming unjust systems that may have pervasive effects on future generations. Workplace violence directed against nurses in the emergency department has many negative impacts on their productivity, physical and mental health, quality of care offered, and financial implications on health care organizations. Therefore, nurse advocates must lobby for legislative policies to be implemented in all institutions to offer preventative strategies against workplace violence. Nurses and other health care professionals who fall victim to the issue should support each other to overcome the aftermath of such incidences.
