Bleomycin is a medication used to treat Hodgkin’s lymphoma, testicular cancer, and cervical cancer among other cancer diseases. The medication acts by binding to the guanosine-cytosine-rich portions of the DNA through the S tripeptide and so induces the DNA strand breaks (DeHart et al., 2021). Alternatively, the drug is also associated with the inhibition of the thymidine portion into the DNA strand. The common side effects of the medication include weight loss, hair loss, and redness of the skin. According to Calaway, et al. (2018), the medication is likely to induce pneumonitis and pulmonary fibrosis; therefore, the patients should be closely monitored for such complications. In addition, some patients develop hypersensitivity. Hypersensitive reactions can be fatal and thus must be monitored as well.

Bleomycin interacts with brentuximab, digoxin, and gentamycin among other antibiotics. The medication’s therapeutic efficacy also tends to reduce when taken together with the herbal medications. In some cases, the concentration of bleomycin in the serum may increase and cause toxicity. In case of interactions, the healthcare providers should stop the medications and address the patient’s symptoms. The goal of the therapeutic plan and administration is to reduce adverse reactions and improve the patient’s health outcomes. Therefore, the patient’s symptoms ought to be monitored for possible adverse reactions and appropriate remedies initiated. Watson (2018) provided guidelines that the medication can be administered intravenously or intramuscularly. The recommended dose of 225 x103 IU should be given.

Finally, genetic and ethnic factors affect the therapeutic outcomes of the medication. Poor adherence to the prescription due to religious and cultural factors could lower the efficacy of the drug. Alternatively, cases of hypersensitivity have been reported and they are linked to immunogenic reactions due to genetic factors.
