Ceftriaxone is a medication used to treat gonorrhea. The medication inhibits the mucopeptide synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. The beta-lactam moiety of the medication binds to the endopeptidase, carboxypeptidase, and transpeptidases; the enzymes are involved in cell synthesis (Al kraiem et al., 2018). Therefore, interruption of the process results in the bactericidal effect. On the other hand, the medication may result in convulsion, diarrhea, mouth sores, and dark-colored urine. Patients could develop mild diarrhea, vaginal itching, and a hard lump at the point of injection. Special considerations should be taken not to use diluent containing calcium such as Ringer’s lactate when administering Hartmann’s solution. The drug seems to interact negatively with CAM-containing calcium.
Ceftriaxone has been proven effective in managing gonorrhea and that is why it was selected in this study. A study by Kueakulpattana et al. (2021) indicates that azithromycin and ceftriaxone are effective in managing gonorrhea; though, the emerging cases of resistance present a significant threat to the treatment. Similarly, the study by Day et al. (2018) showed that ceftriaxone was among the most effective treatment options for gonorrhea. There are concerns of resistance that can be addressed by educating the patients on the need to adhere to the prescriptions.
