Nursing is my career of choice because of my desire to help people. I derive satisfaction from making a difference in someone’s life, whether it creates a major or minor impact. Passion is an essential element in nursing, given the challenging nature of a nursing career. Only nurses who are passionate about their career survive the high-demanding practice. My passion for nursing is distinguishable because I have nurtured it from a young age. Having grown up in a communal setting, I noticed from the age of 10 that I derived satisfaction from going out of my way to help others in the community. I developed the desire for a career path that would allow me to exercise my inner abilities and yearn to care for people.
I am highly passionate about working with underserved communities to improve health outcomes, welfare, wellbeing, and quality of life. People do not choose where they are born or their socioeconomic conditions, but society has the power to change their circumstances through equity. My nursing philosophy draws from luck egalitarianism, which promotes the idea of distributive justice that people underserved by luck deserve equal treatment and other interventions to compensate for their less privileged situations. I deeply care about disadvantaged people, and I believe the nursing course will give the proper foundation to advocate for the rights of this population. Additionally, I would describe my passion for nursing as a “calling” because I am drawn to save lives and work with people suffering to restore their happiness. I derive comfort and joy in knowing that I have upheld the value of life in my everyday practice.

The three most important attributes of an exemplary nurse are compassion, caring, and empathy (Hooge et al., 2021). Over the years, while pursuing my interest in the nursing career, I have cultivated these attributes, and I am confident in applying these in my practice to promote the health and wellbeing of patients and populations. I will demonstrate caring attributes by embodying important values in nursing, including ensuring human dignity, social justice, integrity, and altruism (Prezerakos, 2018). These values express the selflessness required in nursing to promote the wellbeing and welfare of other people. Likewise, I will demonstrate empathy by employing effective communication skills such as active listening, allowing me to listen and comprehend what the patient is going through. Additionally, I will strive to be kind, respectful, and nonjudgmental in all my practice engagement to show patients that they are valuable and their opinions matter. I will also enhance my cultural competence skills to provide personalized care that correlates with patients’ needs.
Compassion is the number one attribute that defines nursing practice. All nursing theorists emphasize the role of compassion in nursing practice. I will demonstrate compassion for the remainder of my career by treating my patients with a warm and positive attitude, being sensitive to their suffering, and understanding their needs to create a person-centered intervention plan (Dalvandi et al., 2019). In addition, I will express compassion by being there for my patients emotionally, especially those faced with challenging situations such as terminal illnesses or end-of-life care. I will encourage, listen, and prepare them emotionally for the inevitable. Finally, I endeavor to support patients to gain comfort and independence as much as possible as they undertake treatment.
I believe that this scholarship will be instrumental in attaining my career goals by giving me the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills required for exemplary nursing practice. I sincerely hope that you will consider my application.
