Such differences imply that nurses and other health care professionals will always come across patients with varying health needs. Since there is no universal approach to health care delivery, professionals must assess patients’ concerns comprehensively and provide evidence-based, patient-centered interventions. For a practicum, exploring the needs of unique population groups provides nurses with a unique opportunity to learn more about health and health care problems. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the intervention plan proposed for the health problem.

Health Problem Summary

Internet gaming addiction is a genuine concern for populations and health care providers. Over time, the problem has intensified as more people become tech-savvy and internet access reaches rural areas. Király et al. (2018) found individual and environmental factors to be the primary causes of internet addiction, leading to intensive gaming and other problems associated with uncontrolled use of the internet. Such factors include mood problems, seeking solace through gaming, and peer influence. Low family cohesion and anxiety disorders also fuel internet gaming addiction. With more patients presenting with the problem in health care settings, nurses should be more interested in exploring internet gaming addiction in more detail and help appropriately.

I selected internet gaming addiction for my project because of three reasons. Firstly, the problem affects other health dimensions including socialization, mental, and physical health. Watkins (2021) posited that gaming addiction leads to a sedentary lifestyle. Low physical activity causes lifestyle diseases including obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Secondly, exploring the problem provides an opportunity to learn more about people’s health and challenges from a different perspective. Thirdly, it offers an opportunity to collaborate with other health care professionals to provide a relevant, patient-centered intervention.

Internet gaming addiction matters to my professional practice since it is among the health problems affecting patient safety and increasing health care costs. Patients addicted to internet gaming and other antisocial behaviors are challenging to manage since their behaviors are likely to impede recovery. Watkins (2021) contended that gaming addiction brings concentration and attention problems. Such challenges may adversely affect medication adherence. Co-occurring disorders make disease management expensive and more burdening. To the individual, internet gaming disorder affects the quality of life, personal and professional growth, and overall growth and development. As a result, understanding it and providing a comprehensive solution is vital for optimal health and productive populations.

Role of Leadership and Change Management in Addressing the Problem

Nurses apply many strategies to address health care challenges. The role of leadership and change management in addressing internet gaming disorder since nurses must influence, inspire, and support the affected patients to adopt and sustain new behaviors. Nilsen et al. (2020) defined change management as supporting people through change and integrating mechanisms to ensure the change is a long-term success. Leadership primarily involves showing people the way forward and doing what is suitable for individual and population health. Transformational leadership influenced me to develop the teaching plan. Its central tenet is leaders driving change by inspiring people to achieve the desired vision (Seljemo et al., 2020). The second strategy influencing developing the teaching plan is cultural change. Addressing the problem successfully requires a shift from old behaviors and adopting a new healthy lifestyle. The shift is challenging, hence the need for inspiration and support through the change process.

Nursing ethics also guided developing the teaching plan. From an ethical viewpoint, health care interventions should be problem-driven and patient-centered. Their primary mandate should be benefiting patients as anchored in the beneficence principle. The other consideration is reducing harm, as the nonmaleficence principle dictates. Generally, the teaching plan outlines how to enable internet gaming addicts to be more sensitive about their choices while empowering them to make healthier, better choices. The educational intervention’s primary role is benefiting the patient by ensuring that they are informed and ready to adopt new lifestyles.

Internet gaming addicts’ problems are highly diverse. Understanding such problems and everyday experiences requires close communication and collaboration in every step of health care delivery. Patients are influential stakeholders of the health care process. Nurses cannot address patients’ needs without an in-depth understanding of their severity, patients’ attitudes towards their conditions, and the resources available to optimize health outcomes. Gathering patients’ input is the foundation of patient-centered care. It helps to understand a health care problem from a patient’s dimension to enable nurses to formulate patient-centered, appropriate, and culturally-sensitive interventions.

Nursing and health care literature recommends various best-practice strategies for effective communication and collaboration. Most strategies follow the principle that nurse-patient collaboration is the foundation of satisfactory care. Bombard et al. (2018) advised health care providers to engage patients in decision-making and structuring treatment plans. Such engagement makes patients feel more empowered and increases adherence to the treatment plan. The other highly emphasized strategy is open communication. Prentice et al. (2020) found that open communication increases trust in health care professionals and encourages patients to be involved in the health care process. Open communication also fosters interprofessional collaboration, critical in promoting holistic care.

Government Policies Guiding the Plan’s Development

Like many other unhealthy behaviors affecting people’s health, the government has formulated many policies to control internet gaming addiction. One of such policies is limiting access by restricting purchasing or renting of video games to minors (American Psychological Association, 2020). The government further requires gaming companies to provide adequate information about the risks of video gaming, including their addictive effect and promoting aggression. Such policies show the importance of an educated populace in improving decision-making about their choices.

Nursing research exploring the role of policies in improving outcomes for internet gaming addiction confirms the effectiveness of policies in promoting desirable behaviors. Policy regulations work best in minors, which prevents the problem from escalating and becoming unmanageable in adulthood. For instance, the shutdown system blocks access to online games between specific times of the day (Király et al., 2018). Increasing the taxation of video games discourages gaming since the hobby becomes more expensive. Király et al. (2018) further advised gaming companies to provide adequate information by warning messages and rating games by addictiveness. Such information will help gamers make informed choices and avoid addiction. In each case, the importance of an informed populace is highly emphasized.

Effects of the Proposed Intervention

The proposed intervention is patient education as outlined in the teaching plan. Through patient education, nurses collaborate with patients to explore a problem, devise a course of action, and encourage behavioral change to improve health outcomes (Fereidouni et al., 2019). In this case, positive behavior change implies overcoming internet gaming addiction and adopting more productive behaviors. Such a shift will improve the quality of care and reduce costs to the system by reducing the number of patients seeking health care advice and treatment. For instance, the number of obese patients will reduce since reducing internet gaming will reduce sedentary living. The education plan will also enhance patient safety by reducing aggression, concentration problems, and the risk of injuries high among internet gamers. It will create a population that understands the basics of self-care and can avoid practices that can risk health at home and in health care facilities.

After helping patients, performance analysis is crucial to determine whether the plan achieves the set objectives. Accordingly, it is vital to compare performance with state and federal benchmark data on care quality, patient safety, and costs to the health care system and the individual. Reliable and available data sources for benchmarking include Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) and the National Committee for Quality Assurance quality indicators. Quality measures by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) could be another source of reliable data for benchmarking.

Technology, Care Coordination, and Community Resources

Technologies relevant to addressing internet gaming addiction include smartphone apps, telehealth, EHRs, and patient portals. Smartphone apps can be used to open chat groups for the patients where they will be motivating each other and receive appropriate educational content. Telehealth and patient portals are for monitoring and connecting with patients, while EHRs promote interprofessional collaboration and enable care providers to exchange patient data (Sharma et al., 2018). Care coordination is critical since mental health professionals should be involved in formulating treatment plans depending on a patient’s condition. Community resources include support groups, rehabilitation centers, and social health workers.

Conclusion

Health problems affect care quality and patient safety. They also increase health care costs depending on their magnitude and types. Nurses should explore health problems and design appropriate interventions as they affect patients and populations. After analyzing the internet gaming addiction problem, the most appropriate intervention is patient education. As outlined in the teaching plan, the patients will undergo an intensive session to explore the risks of their behavior, change strategies, and resources available to enable them to achieve the desired goals.
