One of the factors that have to be taken into consideration when caring for patients is cultural factors. States of health are revealed in different ways across ethnicities and cultures and therefore, nurses have to be culturally competent (Cunningham et al., 2018). African Americans living with diabetes type 2 in Prince George’s County, Maryland, need diabetes care. The public health nurse has to recognize that the culture of these patients may impact their interaction hence the nature of care offered. Diabetes rates are as high as 12.5% in the county, and most of these patients are African Americans. This population needs various community resources to help them manage their condition. They include community diabetes support groups, interpretation services, and community health workers who offer valuable information. The gap in services that exist is inadequate access to care services caused by poverty and lack of knowledge on when to seek care services.

Various cultural considerations may inform my approach to caring for this population. For example, English is a second language for most African-Americans, and thus need bilingual providers to better care for them. Again spirituality is a strong aspect in this community as they believe there is a power greater than individuals who control everything, including healing from the chronic disease. There is diabetes genetic predisposition in this population as studies have shown that the risk of diabetes among African Americans can be high as double that of Non-Hispanic Whites even after adjusting the rest of the known factors, pointing to a possible role played by genetics (Layton et al., 2018).

Culture influences how patients cooperate with the care providers. Therefore, this population needs an evidence-based, culturally competent behavior change to promote their health. One such behavior change is the adjustment of diet and engagement in physical activity (Care, 2019). Through culturally sensitive and specific education, this population can be taught about healthy foods to help them manage the condition better. Living an active lifestyle with regular physical activity has also been shown to impact positively on diabetes outcomes.

Overview: This week, you will identify any genetic predisposition your chosen population (African Americans living with Diabetes Type 2 in Prince George’s County, Maryland) has to a particular disease and develop primary practice interventions that reflect the cultural considerations of the population. Then, you’ll develop culturally appropriate, measurable interventions to help your population members maintain an optimal state of health, avoiding the problem that you identified them being at risk for developing.
Practicum Discussion: Culturally aware nurses recognize that states of health are revealed differently across cultures and ethnicities. Culture and ethnic background will affect the way each individual responds to health, illness, and death (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020). These nurses are also aware of their own biases, which may affect the care they provide to others (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020). Because most nurses work in institutions with individual patients, they are accustomed to delivering culturally competent care on a one-on-one basis. When a public health nurse deals with a population (African Americans living with Diabetes Type 2 in Prince George’s County, Maryland), he or she must consider how the population culture affects the ways in which the community nurse may interact. This can be with regard to the provision of education or mass health care needs such as those required in a foodborne illness, if mass vaccinations are needed for a communicable disease outbreak, or if education is required to prevent heart disease. In addition to understanding the nuances of the culture of a population, community health nurses must understand the role genetics play in health. Some disorders, such as glaucoma and diabetes, have a genetic link, as do some cancers, such as breast and ovarian.
