PHE 4200 Week 1 Midweek Assignment Paper

Covid19 is a pandemic that originated from China, which led to the disruption in global economies. The pandemic led to restricted public activities, transportation, interruption of learning, and high workload in healthcare institutions. Healthcare providers are at the frontline in the management and prevention of covid19 (Asnakew et al., 2021). Their role predisposes them to mental and physical health problems, which affect their quality of life. Post-traumatic stress disorder is one of the mental health problems that healthcare providers face due to covid19 (Kabunga & Okalo, 2021). Studies conducted in most countries reveal that healthcare workers were increasingly predisposed to post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health problems, including depression and anxiety. Work-related factors such as lack of protective personal equipment, witnessing the suffering and death of the affected patients, and high levels of stress predispose them to post-traumatic stress disorder (Pan et al., 2021).

Interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy have proven effective in managing post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms (Sun et al., 2021). Cognitive-behavioral therapy improves resilience among healthcare providers, which strengthens their development of effective coping strategies against occupational stress and burnout. Despite its effectiveness, cognitive behavioral therapy use in preventing and managing mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder remains unexplored in most settings (Benhamou & Piedra, 2020). Therefore, the purpose of this project is to examine the effect of cognitive-behavioral therapy in improving post-traumatic stress disorder among healthcare providers caring for covid19 patients. Cognitive-behavioral therapy will be provided to selected healthcare providers to determine its effectiveness in improving its symptoms and their quality of life. The outcomes of the project will include a reduction in distressing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder among healthcare providers.

Problem Statement

Covid19 has placed immense pressure on healthcare providers. Healthcare providers provide direct patient care, which increases their vulnerability to mental and physical health problems compared to the general population. Studies conducted in the past show varying rates of post-traumatic stress disorder. For example, post-traumatic stress disorder prevalence was 55.1% (Asnakew et al., 2021), 13.52% (Sahebi et al., 2021), 14.9% (Alshehri & Alghamdi, 2021), and 56.8% in the study by Ayalew et al., (2022). The high vulnerability of healthcare workers to covid19 has been found to increase their fear of contagion, isolation, family health, and stigma. The consequence includes overwhelming psychological pressure, which increases their risk of psychological problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, fear, and insomnia (Asnakew et al., 2021). Psychotherapy interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy are effective in managing post-traumatic stress disorder in the general population. Its use in healthcare workers affected by post-traumatic stress disorder has not been largely explored. A meta-analysis performed by Sun et al., (2021) demonstrated that cognitive-behavioral therapy had the most significant effect on healthcare providers affected by post-traumatic stress disorder during the pandemic. Interventions such as empathic listening, values clarification, validation of crisis, self-monitoring, relaxation techniques, and acceptance may be effective in improving post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms (Benhamou & Piedra, 2020). Despite this evidence, the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy has not been explored in the practice site to determine its benefits to healthcare providers affected by post-traumatic stress disorder, hence, the focus of the project.

  1. What is the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder among healthcare providers involved in the care of covid19 patients?
  2. What is the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy in healthcare providers affected by post-traumatic stress disorder due to caring for covid19 patients?

Methodology

Questionnaires on post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms will be administered at the beginning of the project to obtain pre-intervention data. The data will be compared with that obtained at the end of the project to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. The intervention for the project will entail the provision of cognitive-behavioral interventions to healthcare providers affected by post-traumatic stress disorder due to caring for covid19 patients. Trained registered nurses will deliver cognitive-behavioral therapy interventions to the selected participants. Questionnaires will be administered at the end of the project to obtain data on the effectiveness of the intervention. Quantitative methods of data analysis, including analysis of variance, mean, and standard deviation will be used.

Regular assessment will be performed in the different phases of project implementation. Feedback will be provided to the implementers on the improvements needed to achieve optimum outcomes. The project progress will be determined using the benchmark data and the realization of the set milestones.

Conclusion

Covid19 has affected significantly healthcare providers involved in the care of covid19 patients. Healthcare providers are highly predisposed to mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, which affect their health and quality of life. Interventions that include cognitive behavioral therapy can be used to manage post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. However, its use has not been explored in the practice site, hence, the focus of this project.

Week 1 Midweek Assignment
I’ve chosen my aggregate of three from Avance Eye Care center In Fort Pierce, Florida. What I will discuss with this group of 3 is problems they’re facing in their lives as it relates to COVID19 and how has these problems affecting their mental health negatively. You can guide your research based on the above background info I’ve provided and use the direction below to guide you in doing this project.
In a Microsoft Word document of 2-3 pages formatted in APA style, you will describe a draft plan for your capstone project using the format below. Please note that the title and reference pages should not be included in the total page count of your paper.

Introduction
The introduction establishes the scope, context, and significance of the project being conducted by summarizing current understanding and background information (literature) about the topic, stating the purpose of the work, explaining briefly the approach used to examine the problem, and identifies one or two outcomes of the project.

Problem Statement
A problem statement is the description of a currently existing issue, which needs to be addressed with evidence-based interventions. The statement of the problem is the focal point of the project. Be sure to back up the noted issue/problem with evidence. Must include citations of evidence.

Questions
Identify one to two questions to address with your capstone project. Based on the constraint of project length of 10 weeks you may not have time to address a multitude of questions.

Methodology
The methodology section of the paper addresses:

when and how you will collect the pre-intervention data,
what the intervention(s) is (are),
when/how the intervention(s) will be implemented,
how and when you will perform your post-intervention data measurement,
how the data will be analyzed.
A friendly reminder that unless your project has gone through the IRB process you will not be allowed to collect data on more than 3 people. For data collection, you will choose 3 people from your aggregate.

Timetable
Develop a timetable considering the following questions:

When will your project start and finish?
Are there particular steps or stages to the project?
What objectives have you set for this investigation? Are they addressed in the timeline?
Is the timetable realistic?
How will you provide regular updates and progress reports and to whom will you provide them? How will you demonstrate progress?
