Childhood obesity is a serious public health issue that is growing at an alarming rate and has become an epidemic in the United States and globally. The State of Childhood Obesity (2022) reports that nearly 16.2% of young people in the US aged between 10 and 17 years are obese. Childhood obesity is associated with dire implications such as poor health and a reduction in rates of life expectancy among children. Obese children and adolescents are likely to suffer from various conditions such as heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, and hypertension. Obesity also increases the risk of social and psychological issues such as discrimination and poor self-esteem. Moreover, childhood obesity is associated with long-term effects including a high probability of adulthood obesity and the associated chronic diseases. Childhood obesity is also attributed to serious economic impact emanating from heavy expenditure on the condition.
The proposed nursing solution of health education on lifestyle changes can address childhood obesity by ensuring that nurse educators spearhead the education programs and create the desired lifestyle and behavioral changes for proper obesity management. Health education can also address obesity by stressing the use of evidence-based interventions, which rely on the current and best existing evidence to provide obesity management education, which is essential in delivering quality clinical interventions (Nga et al., 2019). Ultimately, the proposed nursing intervention empowers obese adolescents to make lifestyle changes and informed decisions to reduce obesity rates.

My current perspective and direction were influenced by the alarming rates of increase in adolescent diabetes. Failure to take immediate measures to address childhood obesity could lead to catastrophic results. Childhood obesity could lead to dire complications such as high mortality rates, high morbidity rates, heart diseases, kidney problems, and social and psychological issues (Salam et al., 2020). Nurses are recommended to lead patient education because they have a close relationship with patients and also have immense knowledge in caring for the patient than other clinicians.
