Healthcare providers consider the multiple factors that influence patient experiences with the disease process and outcomes. An ethical approach to care is important for any healthcare provider. The ethical healthcare approach entails the consideration of principles that include beneficence, informed consent, non-maleficence, justice, and autonomy among others. An ethical approach to care contributes to patient safety. By considering principles such as beneficence and non-maleficence, healthcare providers adopt evidence-based interventions in the care process that contribute to safety and quality outcomes in the care process. An ethical approach to care also contributes to quality and efficiency. Healthcare providers focus on the adoption of care interventions that minimize resource inefficiencies for both their patients and healthcare institutions(Suhonen et al., 2018). An ethical approach to care also contributes to patient-centeredness in the care process. Healthcare providers must implement care interventions that align with the patients’ values, beliefs, and preferences. They must also involve them in making crucial decisions on how their health needs can be addressed efficiently. Therefore, the implications of an ethical approach to care include the need for ethical awareness among nurses and the increased need for the use of evidence-based interventions in the care process(Haddad & Geiger, 2022). Ethical awareness will eliminate legal and ethical issues in the care process while evidence-based interventions will optimize patient care outcomes, including safety, quality, and efficiency.

Potential Impacts of Specific Healthcare Policy Provisions

Healthcare policy provisions affect health outcomes and patient experiences with the care process. One of the healthcare policies that affect health outcomes and patient experiences is the Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act was adoptedto increase the American population with health insurance coverage. It also aimed at addressing the barriers to access to and utilization of care services due to the high costs of healthcare services. The Affordable Care Act has increased the access to care for most of the American population, improving their health outcomes. The act has also increased the utilization of health promotion interventions such as screening services for optimum population health(Collins & Saylor, 2018). Therefore, patient outcomes and experiences with healthcare services have improved leading to a healthier population.

The other healthcare policy that affects patient outcomes and experiences is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). HIPAA is a federal policy that was adopted in America to promote the safe utilization of health information technologies. The policy requires healthcare institutions and providers to adopt interventions that protect the integrity of patients’ private and confidential data. The policy has improved patient experiences and health outcomes in that they can utilize health information technologies to achieve optimum outcomes without fearing the integrity of their data(Qin, 2019). Health technologies such as electronic health records and Telehealth have also been adopted to improve patient outcomes and experiences with the care process.

Nurse’s Vital Role in Care Coordination and Continuum of Care

Nurses play crucial roles in the care coordination and continuum of care processes. One of the roles is acting as a patient advocate. Nurses ensure the adopted interventions in care coordination and continuum of care protect the rights and needs of their patients. They ensure the consideration of ethical principles such as autonomy, informed consent, confidentiality, and privacy of the patients’ data. Nurses also act as health educators in care coordination and continuum of care. They educate the patients and their significant others about the existing interventions that should be adopted to achieve optimum outcomes.
