The existence of mankind is highly structured and designed by divergent ideas, concepts, and perspectives. The perspectives human beings accommodate from childhood influence their lives and later impact their professional growth and career development. The establishment of a systematic personal worldview is the core determinant that can guide nursing professionals towards achieving nursing goals and medical aims focused on delivering high-quality care to all patients no matter their race, religion, and gender (Bender & Holmes, 2019). The essence of this essay is to reflect on my worldview influencing the formulation of my nursing practice philosophy. The paper analyzes divergent components related to my worldview including my culture, religion, and spiritualism. Additionally, the work explores nursing theory based on my worldview and how it will impact my professional development in the future.

Personal Worldview: Religion, Spirituality, and Culture

Nursing professional is anchored on religious, cultural, and spiritual components influencing the nursing processes and procedures. As such, religion is a vital therapeutic component as it helps in meeting patients’ medical needs, understanding, and hope. I believe in that religious practices are an inevitable tool a nurse consolidates to achieve professional goals in the nursing industry.  My religion is Christianity and I the believe in the existence that a supernatural: God purposely created everything in the universe. God is the greatest and His divine existence guides our professional aspects (Rieg et al., 2018). My Christianity perspective has always been a driving force in my decisions and interaction with patients from different religions and cultures.

God provides wisdom, knowledge, and understanding necessary to appropriate health care procedures aligning with the needs of the general population. I believe that nurses are called to serve selflessly and portray mutual care for every human being in need of care in hospital settings and the community. Thus, nursing is a calling to incorporate science and academic knowledge to relieve patients from physical pain and distress (Chiang et al., 2020). Believing in prayers and the power of miracles strengthens my faith in undertaking my duties. Consequently, spiritualism forms the central pillar of my faith.  Despite acknowledging science and its contribution to quality and improved care, I have learned to honor patients’ religious diversities and relate to them as individuals to understand how their beliefs influence their medical perceptions (Newbanks et al., 2018). Integrating religious and spiritual concepts have helped me in expanding my responsibilities as a nurse beyond primary functions.

The primary role of a nurse is to focus majorly on mental and physical healing. However, during emotional and physical distress, the spiritual segment is also in discomfort. When the patient is going through deep pain, they become more concerned and their needs exceed medication. Their focus changes from physical elements to the spiritual composition. In such instances, taking care of patients’ spiritual needs can help them find peace during care processes. Considering Christian-based care has assisted me to design spiritual care in different organizations as a segment of total care fitting into nursing processes including evaluation, assessment, planning, and implementation. In addition, the cultural component builds the final apex of my worldview. I was born and raised in a Christian community. Growing up and studying in such environments has taught me the value of kindness, humility, love, and compassion to execute nursing responsibilities effectively (Swanson et al., 2019). Consolidating Christian culture breeds compassion that has been critical in taking me from competent nurse to treating patients with actions involving emotional facets of the interaction with patients.

Nursing Theory

The integration of effective and practical-based nursing theory determines the excellence of care delivery. Lydia Hall’s theory of care, cure, and core has impacted my worldview and structuring of personal practice philosophy in nursing landscapes. According to an article published in the British Journal of Community Nursing, Lydia Hall’s theory is focused on proposed essential elements of nursing informing the primary and competent functionality of nurses. The essential components the theory proposes include care, cure, and core. The study shows that care focuses fundamentally on the primary role of the nurse to deliver appropriate care to patients. Cure involves complete attention and effective treatment procedures for improved patient care outcomes. Core integrates the care patients are accorded and cure patients achieve based on appropriate treatment plans and quality care provision (Hoeck & Delmar, 2017). My Christian-based worldview highly resonates with this theory.

Practice Philosophy

My practice philosophy is anchored on values, religious beliefs, social contracts, and ethics. Nursing is a higher calling; nurses are called to serve and care for patients in the community irrespective of their beliefs and culture. Through doing this, we fulfill the expectation of God encouraging cooperation and compassion to ensure the divergent needs of patients in the community are taken care of.  However, factors creating limitations can emerge including competent knowledge of the contemporary innovations and the conflicting nature of religion and science. But I strongly believe that a cohesive relationship with patients and relevant participants in nursing care landscapes improves quality care delivery and both physical and spiritual healing becomes achievable. I value mankind as the central plan of God’s creation. Christianity teaches that God created the human being in His image and likeness (Roy, 2018). Thus, I will treat every patient in the community with respect and decency for the best care outcomes.

My Worldview and Nursing Theory in Resolving Practical Issue

Four years ago, I was working with an organization in a Muslim community. It was a test of faith based on differences in religious ideologies, teachings, and beliefs. However, consolidating spiritual understanding and care, cure, and core theory helped me in enhancing interaction with patients leading to culturally competent care and improved nursing care outcomes. Muslim communities believe that Allah (God) gives and preserves life, despite nursing professionals’ central role in care provision (Padela & Zaidi, 2018). Christian-based religious beliefs became vital to help me strive to understand and accommodate other ideologies in delivering appropriate care for my patients.

Role of My Worldview in Developing Future Practice

My worldview and Hall’s theory have encouraged me to believe nursing is the perfect career in the medical dimensions. Thus, I will continue to strengthen my competence in the nursing field to achieve extensive experience. Academics, technology, and working in different cultures will improve my cultural competency and be in a position to work in every culture with divergent beliefs irrespective of their contradiction with my religion (Mudd et al., 2020). My worldview and nursing theory are the major tools to help in taking responsibility for nursing leadership and advocacy to enhance the well-being of patients and associates in the nursing industry.

Conclusion

Worldviews in nursing are essential as they allow nurses to have guidelines in their practice. Worldviews provide nurses with wider perspectives as they deal with diverse patients from different cultural backgrounds. Through these worldviews, nurses appreciate different points-of-view as they offer care to patients and focus on professional development.
