Capstone Assessment 1: Assessing the Problem Paper

In their routine practice, nurses meet patients with varying health needs. Nurses also learn about many health problems affecting people and communities diversely through the media, community visits, and individual research. As a baccalaureate-prepared nurse, it is crucial to explore health problems in more detail and help the affected populations accordingly. It is even better to explore health problems outside one’s specialty to enable nurses to learn about health from a broader perspective. The purpose of this paper is to define the health problem for the practicum, analyze evidence from literature and the impacts of policies, and propose leadership strategies for improving outcomes.

Defining the Population Health Problem

Health care costs and workload in health care organizations have increased in the recent past, with controllable problems among the leading contributing factors. With technology use growing progressively, the population of internet gamers has increased proportionately. Unfortunately, although gaming is associated with learning and enhancing mental prowess, many physical, emotional, and mental health problems have stemmed from it. The consequences are more severe in young people and addicted marriage partners. Due to its multifaceted nature, my time during the practicum will be dedicated to volunteers with internet gaming addiction. It is a unique group to enhance nurses’ understanding of the effects of technology on health.

Internet gaming addiction is a severe health problem that requires the attention of all health care providers. Although it is usually explored as a mental health problem, its causes and effects demonstrate that it is broader and affects people diversely. Örnek and Gündoğmuş (2022) found that internet gaming alters people’s social relationships and eating habits. It encourages sedentary lifestyles, increasing obesity rates. In the current health practice, obesity control and management among adults is over $260 billion in the United States (Cawley et al., 2021). Reducing such costs requires nurses to probe the cause and help in formulating lasting solutions.

Due to their central role in health care delivery, nurses must play a vital role in promoting healthy living. They must also collaborate with relevant partners to assess impending health dangers and respond proactively. Data shows that dealing with internet gaming addiction might become more challenging as time advances. The leading issue is increasing exposure to technology and the internet. According to Anderson and Jiang (2018), approximately 95% of young people have a smartphone or access to one, and half of them are online on a near-constant basis. Unless there are measures to control internet use and gaming, this population is highly vulnerable to internet gaming addiction and associated problems.

For the practicum, the primary focus will be the experiences of internet gaming addicts with technology. The sessions will help evaluate their everyday life and how they ended up becoming addicts. The other objective is to examine the challenges they face when trying to stop the habit and the interventions necessary to control the problem. Based on the findings, this unique group will be educated on the effects of their behaviors and sources of support to enable them to regulate their behaviors. Any progressive effort towards positive behavior change will be vital in promoting healthy living to reduce the proportion of internet gaming addicts, co-occurring problems, and health care costs.

Evidence Guiding Nursing Actions Related to Internet Gaming Addiction

Nurses make many decisions that affect health care outcomes diversely. To enhance their decision-making accuracy, nurses are advised to rely heavily on literature from scholarly sources. The same case applies to internet gaming addiction and its health dangers. One of the key findings from literature consistent with everyday observations in nursing practice is the increase in health problems depending on risk factors. Internet gaming addiction, leading to obesity and mental health problems, has increased due to the increased availability of technology gadgets and access to the internet (Örnek & Gündoğmuş, 2022). Consequently, internet gaming addiction cannot be controlled without addressing the risk factors.

When formulating interventions to address a population health concern, health care providers should be adequately informed about barriers to implementing evidence-based practice. One of the key barriers to implementation is the lack of resources to reach this critical population and incomprehensive policies. Király et al. (2018) found that there are no comprehensive policies for restricting internet gaming at homes and social places. The other barrier is the perception of video gaming and its promotion. According to Watkins (2021), video games are intensively promoted as a valuable education and cognitive health tools. The intensified promotion makes it challenging for government and health care providers to address internet gaming as a health risk.

Despite barriers to implementation, there is extensive research guiding health care providers in improving population outcomes for internet gaming addicts. Király et al. (2018) claimed that the US government could adopt the shutdown system used in South Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand. Under the shutdown system, the government obliges game providers to block gaming at selected times of the day. The other policy is to limit gaming time in social places such as cyber cafes. Under this policy, the government prohibits evening or late-night access to gaming, primarily minors and school-age children (Király et al., 2018). Due to the effectiveness of such policies in China and Thailand, nurses can participate in policymaking as partners with the government. For instance, they can find scientific and practice-related evidence on health care risks and participate in developing empowering programs (Hajizadeh et al., 2021). Such programs include educational and rehabilitation centers for addicts.

As nurses participate in policymaking and implementing evidence-based practice, they should use nursing theories to guide their actions. A similar approach is needed during the practicum. Younas and Quennell (2019) described a nursing theory as organized, evidence-based concepts that define the nursing practice’s scope. In response, nursing theories help nurses justify the methodologies they use to drive practice change or patient care interventions. For instance, the theory of interpersonal relations will be highly relevant during the practicum. Its central tenet is that nurses’ interactions and communication with patients are instrumental in influencing patients’ behavior and well-being (Wasaya et al., 2021). As a result, communication and interaction with internet gaming addicts will be a priority area to enable this unique group to change its behaviors.

Policies and Improving Population Outcomes

Organizational and government policies have been highly effective in improving population outcomes for internet gaming addiction. At the organizational level, policies such as holistic assessment of patients presenting with internet addiction help design appropriate counseling and therapy sessions or medications. Holistic assessment involves diagnosing co-occurring problems, including depression, anxiety, and antisocial disorders. Government policies include anti-gaming regulations. For instance, Király et al. (2018) advised governments to increase taxes for video games so that gaming companies increase purchasing and subscription costs. Such a policy would minimize usage, particularly for gamers from low-income households.

Due to the effectiveness of such policies, nurses should intensify their efforts in policymaking to improve health outcomes, prevent illness, and reduce hospital readmissions. One of their primary mandates in policymaking is advocating for the right policies to adequately address social determinants of health (Williams et al., 2018). Under this obligation, nurses can advocate for health education to internet gaming addicts and vulnerable young people to reduce their risk of internet gaming disorder (IGD). Creating an informed populace helps people make the right choices and avoid behaviors that risk their health. Similarly, reducing addiction would reduce sedentary lifestyles associated with gaming, reducing obesity and other illnesses stemming from physical inactivity.

The effects of local, state, and federal policies on internet gaming are multidimensional. Kuss (2018) explained that such policies seek to address problematic gaming from three dimensions. The first dimension is limiting video game availability. Government interventions to achieve this objective include restricting access to gaming cafes to young people and children. The second policy is reducing risk and harm. The most effective intervention is to ensure that games have warnings and disclaimers about the addiction and overall health dangers. The third area is supporting gamers. They are helped to choose age- and health-appropriate games to avoid addiction.

Leadership Strategies to Improve Outcomes, Patient-Centered Care, and Patient Experience

Like many health practices seeking behavior change, helping internet gaming addicts to transform requires inspiration to change and to set new health goals. As a result, nurses must play their leadership role effectively to influence the target population in the right direction. Participative and transformational leadership are highly effective when advocating for behavior change. Participative leadership promotes inclusion and encourages all people to participate in shared decision-making (Asif et al., 2019). Such leadership encourages adherence to the set goals. On the other hand, transformational leadership inspires people to achieve desired outcomes and achieve opportunities for better health (Seljemo et al., 2020). It advocates for culture change as the foundation of more patient-driven, satisfactory patient care. Leadership would be critical in addressing internet gaming addiction. Its role is to inspire the selected group towards better health practices and enable them set to share realistic goals.

Collaboration and communication will be needed to help this unique group. To achieve this, equal participation is necessary for such situations. Group members will be encouraged to give their views on their experiences, challenges, and help needed. Equal participation will be instrumental in encouraging group members to communicate openly. Regarding communication, open, informal communication should be encouraged. Participants should be allowed to express themselves without restrictions. In case of a question, appropriate and timely feedback should be prioritized.

Behavior change cannot be realized without utilizing effective change management strategies. The first change management strategy needed to address the problem is goal setting. There must be specific goals to achieve and timelines defined. The second change management strategy is to actualize change using a change management model. For instance, Lewin’s model proposes change adoption in three basic steps: unfreezing, change, and refreezing stages (Hussain et al., 2018). In this case, people must be shown the rationale behind changing behavior, supported to change, and new behaviors must be sustained. The last change management strategy is empowering people through communication. Mechanisms to keep communicating and evaluating progress should be explicit.

Conclusion

Nurses meet patients and population groups with different needs. Besides regular diagnosis and treatment of health conditions, nurses should explore population health problems and help to formulate evidence-based interventions. As discussed in this paper, the health problem of interest during practicum is internet gaming addiction. Spending time with internet gaming addicts will be a massive learning opportunity of the experiences and challenges facing this population and the interventions needed to improve their health. Such interventions include health education, policymaking, and social support networks to enable internet gaming addicts to adopt healthy lifestyles.
