Week 2 Database Discussion

A relational database connotes a structured database that stores and enables access to data points that are correlated to one another. Typical relational databases facilitate users to handle predefined data correlations across various databases (Link & Prade, 2019). The major examples of relational databases include Oracle Database, IBM DB2, and Microsoft SQL Server. On the other hand, keys are critical components of the relational database model. They are utilized to establish and recognize relationships between the tables and to recognize any data record within the table. Usually, when storing data, the number of tables needed is huge and different tables are related to one another. Moreover, tables store huge data in them. Therefore, Keys are essential in the effortless identification of any data row in the table.

There are various types of keys in the relational database including super key, which is a set of attributes in a table with the capability of unique recognition of every record within the table. The other key is candidate keys, which connotes an attribute or set of attributes that uniquely recognizes a record. Within the set of the candidate, a single candidate key is picked as the primary key. The primary key characterizes a candidate key which is highly suitable to become the fundamental key for any table. It can uniquely recognize every record in a table. The last type is the secondary key, which is the candidate key and not chosen as a primary key (Eckstein & Schultz, 2018).

Regarding an example of a primary key, it is important to choose a key whose attributes can never change. For instance, when dealing with student identification, the student ID field cannot be selected as the primary key because the ID of a student may change. Therefore, the best primary key should be a College ID or Branch ID. Finally, the question for peers regarding the relational database is, is there a way to physically allocate relational database tables across various sites?
