NRS-433V Research Critiques and PICOT Statement Final Draft Essay
Research Critiques and PICOT Statement Final Draft
Nurses play a critical role in care provision as frontline healthcare workers. However, the chronic problem of nursing shortage threatens effective working of these providers and their ability to offer quality care to patients, and health populations. The projected nursing shortage will hit a million by 2024 and lead to serious implications not just on the workforce but also the industry’s ability to meet the increasing care demands. The American Association of College (AACN) (2021) asserts that nursing shortage emanates from several issues impacting the healthcare sector. The integration of technology like telehealth is considered as one of the best ways to tackle the issue and enhance care provision (De Leeuw et al., 2020). Therefore, based on the PICOT question developed in earlier works, this paper addresses the link between implementing telehealth as a strategy to tackle nursing shortage. The paper revises the PICOT statement, reviews the articles critiqued, offers an evidence-based change by evaluating the link between the PICOT question, the research articles and the nursing practice aspect or issue under investigation.
Quantitative and Quantitative Studies
Nursing Practice Problem and PICOT Question
The population under investigation comprises of nurses who experience burnout as a result of nursing shortage. These nurses have increased workload with increased susceptibility to medication administration errors and other adverse events like fatigue. Nursing shortage impacts care delivery by occasioning poor patient outcomes and satisfaction rates. The proposed intervention in the study is the use of telehealth. The integration of telehealth in nursing care practice and healthcare environment provides a host of benefits that include reduce workload, more accessibility, reduced cost of care, and better interactions between providers and patients.
PICOT Question
Among nurses who experience burnout (P), what is the impact of using telehealth (I) compared to exploring retention strategies (C) in reducing nursing shortage by 50% in healthcare facilities (O) within 6 months (T)?
Background
The use of telehealth to tackle the nursing shortage that leads to burnout has been investigated by different researchers. Qualitative studies on telehealth in nursing look at the benefits that the technology offers for organizations and systems to deal with the issue long-termly. The qualitative studies in this case include Barbosa and Da Silva’s research in 2017 and Bashir and Bastola’s article of 2018. The two article examine the use of telehealth in nursing to improve accessibility and quality of care. Barbosa et al. (2017) focus on nurses’ perspective about interpersonal communication in care provision using telehealth. According to Bashir et al. (2018), telehealth is an innovative model in health care delivery for nurses to manage patients, particularly those with chronic conditions. The articles show the significance of integrating telehealth to assist deal with the acute nursing shortage problem.
Barbosa and Da Silva’s (2017) article focus is evaluation of nurse’s perception on interpersonal communication suing telehealth to offer care while Bashir et al. (2018) aim at examining whether technology impacts perceived level of internal service quality given using telehealth. The research questions in both articles focus on the importance of telehealth in nursing, particularly improving quality, access and addressing the nursing shortage.
The selected quantitative studies in this proposal are Grassl et al. (2018) which focuses on professional’s attitude toward using telemedicine in monitoring pregnancy and Wynn’s (2020) that examines patient satisfaction levels using telehealth in an academic-practice setting or partnership context. Like the qualitative studies, these articles investigate the deployment of telehealth and telemedicine technologies and the perception by healthcare providers like nurses and physicians in different settings. The issues include attitude by healthcare professionals towards telehealth and patient’s perceived satisfaction levels using the technology. The articles’ findings are that telehealth enhances care provision, particularly for populations in remote locations.
The objective and purpose of these two quantitative studies revolves around the critical role that telehealth plays in delivery of patient care in different practice settings. The study by Grassl et al. (2018) shows how obstetricians are leveraging telemedicine to monitor pregnant women in Germany while Wynn (2020) evaluates the level of satisfaction among patients using telehealth to get psychiatric mental health services from providers. The research questions in both articles focus on the positive aspects of healthcare technologies among the different patient populations under investigation.
How do these four articles support the nurse practice issue you chose?
These articles will be used in answering the PICOT question by addressing the intervention part as alternative to the normal retention strategies in healthcare facilities. The articles will demonstrate the impact of using telehealth to enhance accessibility, reduce costs, improve quality of care and patient satisfaction levels. The articles will be instrumental in generating new knowledge and concepts for providers to leverage telehealth to improve overall care provision.
The interventions and comparison groups in the four articles are similar to the ones in the PICOT question. For instance, the Bashir et al. (2018) and Barbosa et al. (2017) address the need for increased telehealth interventions to enhance providers’ and patients’ understanding for better care delivery in different settings. The proposed project targets to enhance application based on knowledge among care providers in different settings.
Method of Study:
The article by Barbosa et al. (2017) uses qualitative approach based on questionnaire while Bashir et al. (2018) employ case studies to investigate the effects of telehealth in service provision. The two quantitative studies employ different quantitative approaches or techniques. Grassl et al. (2018) use a quantitative web-based survey while Wynn (2020) applies a quantitative research design based on appropriate population samples to attain their outcomes.
A benefit of questionnaires is that it allows participants to answer questions based on prompts but limits their perspectives as they have to provide answers as guided. Case studies offer practical situational outcomes but are limited since they cannot be applied to the general population without the research conditions. Web-based surveys are inexpensive and flexible but require IT knowledge. Quantitative research is essential in capturing data but requires effective skills to analyze and interpret.
Results of Study
The results of the two studies demonstrate the critical role that telehealth plays in improving accessibility, quality, and cost of care. Perception among nurses about telehealth integration is highly positive with the two studies indicating that it enhances interpersonal communication and improves quality of care. The studies show that a majority of nurses believe that telehealth can reduce nursing shortage, especially in caring for individuals with chronic conditions like diabetes. The two qualitative studies have implications for nursing practice, especially efforts to tackle nursing shortage. The deployment of telehealth is bound to enhance acceptance among nurses, lead to better quality care and reduce the overall cost of care for patients in different care settings (Silva et al., 2020). The findings are emphatic that entities can leverage telehealth nursing as a remedy for the present and projected shortage.
The article by (Grassl et al. 2018) shows that many obstetricians have limited knowledge about the integral role of telemedicine in enhancing access to care, especially for pregnant women. Only 55% of the participants appreciate the role of telemedicine in care provision. However, young providers have increased rates of acceptance of technologies compared to older members. The second article emphasizes the role of effective partnership among different stakeholders like nurses and nursing students and patients who appreciate the role of telehealth in improving quality care. Telehealth is an essential model to improve in-person follow-up visits for persons getting psychiatric-mental health treatment.
These two articles have implications for nurses as they demonstrate the need to integrate telehealth to expand services and reduce nursing shortage. The studies note the critical role played by technology in improving care outcomes in a host of settings.
Ethical Considerations
Ethical considerations are essential in conducting research. The two fundamental ethical considerations include informed consent and confidentiality. Informed consent implies that a researcher should ensure that participants understand the essence of research and voluntarily participate without any coercion. Confidentiality is the protection of a participant’s information and without any disclosures unless with their consent.
The researchers in these four articles consider informed consent and confidentiality as all participants took part in the studies voluntarily and based on informed consent. The researchers also did not have any conflict of interest. Further, they got approval from respective institutional review boards (IRBs) before commencing their research in different settings.
Outcomes Comparison
The anticipated outcomes for the PICOT question include implementation of the intervention to improve care quality, reduce the rate of turnover, and improve overall satisfaction among patients. The outcomes of the four articles are similar to the anticipated outcomes from the proposed EBP. The articles demonstrate that telehealth can improve overall care outcomes among different patient population, reduce the nursing shortage issue and enhance overall care delivery in a host of settings.
Proposed Evidence-Based Practice Change
The primary nursing practice issue addressed in this study is nursing shortage and its effects on quality care delivery among nurses. The practice problem is associated with the PICOT question since it looks at interventions to mitigate the issue by 50%. Based on the PICOT question, the study’s purpose was to establish the relationship between nursing shortage and telehealth implementation. The implication is that the PICOT question seeks to generate a solution to the identified nursing practice issue of nursing shortage in health care organizations.
The reviewed articles, both qualitative and quantitative show a positive yet emphatic interaction among these issues. The article may have gaps in their analysis and outcomes but emphatically demonstrate the critical role that telehealth can play in different care settings and patient conditions to offer quality care. The research articles show that nurses can play a critical in rolling out telehealth and providing sufficient training for all stakeholders to increase viability and usability.
The proposed EBP change is the integration of telehealth to reduce the current nursing shortage impacting different organizations in healthcare. The reviewed articles show that telehealth integration offers a host of benefits to the providers, patients, and the healthcare system in general (Hoffman, 2020). Implementing the proposed EBP will demonstrate a commitment to reducing the nursing shortage problem and improving care delivery for different patient populations in diverse settings.
Conclusion
Nursing shortage is a chronic problem that affects overall care delivery in a host of settings. The development of a PICOT question and statement and use of research articles will help institutions leverage telehealth and other technologies to improve overall care provision among different patient populations. The paper demonstrates that stakeholder support is critical for organizations to implement innovative models like the integration of telehealth.

PICOT Question and Literature Search
Start Date & Time Due Date & Time Points Jan 31, 2022, 12:00 AM Feb 6, 2022, 11:59 PM 120
The first step of the evidence-based practice process is to evaluate a nursing practice environment to identify a nursing problem in the clinical area. When a nursing problem is discovered, the nurse researcher develops a clinical guiding question to address that nursing practice problem.
For this assignment, you will create a clinical guiding question know as a PICOT question. The PICOT question must be relevant to a nursing practice problem. To support your PICOT question, identify six supporting peer- reviewed research articles, as indicated below. The PICOT question and six peer-reviewed research articles you choose will be utilized for subsequent assignments.
Use the “Literature Evaluation Table” to complete this assignment.
- Select a nursing practice problem of interest to use as the focus of your Start with the patient population and identify a clinical problem or issue that arises from the patient population. In 200–250 words, provide a summary of the clinical issue.
- Following the PICOT format, write a PICOT question in your selected nursing practice problem area of interest. The PICOT question should be applicable to your proposed capstone project (the project students must complete during their final course in the RN-BSN program of study).
- The PICOT question will provide a framework for your capstone
- Conduct a literature search to locate six research articles focused on your selected nursing practice problem of This literature search should include three quantitative and three qualitative peer-reviewed research articles to support your nursing practice problem.
Note: To assist in your search, remove the words qualitative and quantitative and include words that narrow or broaden your main topic. For example: Search for diabetes and pediatric and dialysis. To determine what research design was used in the articles the search produced, review the abstract and the methods section of the article. The author will provide a description of data collection using qualitative or quantitative methods. Systematic Reviews, Literature Reviews, and Metanalysis articles are good resources and provide a strong level of evidence but are not considered primary research articles. Therefore, they should not be included in this assignment.
While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

Prepare this assignment as a 1,500-1,750 word paper using the instructor feedback from the previous course assignments and the guidelines below.
PICOT Question
Revise the PICOT question you wrote in the Topic 1 assignment using the feedback you received from your instructor.
The final PICOT question will provide a framework for your capstone project (the project students must complete during their final course in the RN-BSN program of study).
Research Critiques
In the Topic 2 and Topic 3 assignments, you completed a qualitative and quantitative research critique on two articles for each type of study (4 articles total). Use the feedback you received from your instructor on these assignments to finalize the critical analysis of each study by making appropriate revisions.
The completed analysis should connect to your identified practice problem of interest that is the basis for your PICOT question.
Refer to “Research Critiques and PICOT Guidelines – Final Draft.” Questions under each heading should be addressed as a narrative in the structure of a formal paper.
Proposed Evidence-Based Practice Change
Discuss the link between the PICOT question, the research articles, and the nursing practice problem you identified. Include relevant details and supporting explanation and use that information to propose evidence- based practice changes.
