Improving patient safety by improving the nursing workload is one of the main quality improvement initiatives in my workplace. Nursing workload is one of the most important factors that affect patient safety. When nurses are overworked, they cannot give patients the attention they need, which can lead to mistakes. Fortunately, my workplace recognizes this and has implemented several quality initiatives to improve patient safety. For example, we have reduced the number of patients each nurse is responsible for caring for at one time, and we have increased the number of nurses on staff (Paguio & Yu, 2020). These measures have helped to improve patient safety by reducing the nursing workload.

One of the barriers to the implementation of a process of Improving patient safety by improving the nursing workload is that nurses are already overworked and understaffed. In fact, a recent study found that nurses in the United States work an average of 50 hours per week, and more than 80 percent report working overtime (Vaismoradi et al., 2020). Nurses are also less likely to report errors when they’re overworked because they feel like they don’t have the time or energy to report them. This can be a dangerous cycle, because when nurses are overworked, they’re more likely to make mistakes that can harm patients. And when nurses don’t feel safe reporting errors, those errors can go unreported and continue to put patients at risk. Another barrier is inadequate financial resources to train and employ more nurses and other healthcare providers.

One of the major barriers to translating research into practice is a lack of financial resources. Improved patient safety often requires changes in nursing workload, and nurses are already overworked and underpaid. Another common barrier is the time it takes to implement new practices. Even when researchers have identified an effective intervention, getting hospitals or clinics to adopt the new practice can be a long and difficult process. Often, there is resistance from hospital administrators who are concerned about the cost and impact of change. And finally, lack of awareness or understanding about research results can also be a barrier to implementation. Clinicians may not be aware of studies that suggest better ways to care for their patients, or they may not understand how to apply the findings into actual practice.
