The three important components of the psychiatric interview include the patient’s psychiatric history, substance use and abuse history, and mental status examination (MSE). The psychiatric history is crucial because it gives an outlook about the history of a patient’s present illness and current symptoms by comparing the symptoms with previous treatment and illness episodes (Savander et al., 2021). The substance use and abuse history are important because many patients who develop substance use disorders (SUD) are diagnosed with mental disorders and vice versa. An MSE is important because it assesses the presence and extent of mental impairment in a patient.            The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) is a cognitive screening test developed to help health providers detect mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). MoCA has a higher sensitivity in detecting cognitive decline than the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). It has high sensitivity and specificity in other languages (Bruijnen et al., 2020). MoCA has a high sensitivity in identifying patients with AD and non-AD patients who exhibit behavioral variants of dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, and vascular dementia (Bruijnen et al., 2020). MOCA can be used with clients exhibiting signs of cognitive decline, and clinicians can use it when they suspect that a patient has MCI or AD (Kang et al., 2018). It is helpful to nurse practitioners because it distinguishes patients with MCI from the normal population. It can also help NPs identify patients in the early stages of AD since it has a higher sensitivity than the MMSE in cognitive decline.
