Topic 1 DQ 2

The Institute of Medicine recommends that 90% of practice be evidence-based by 2020. In order to increase the number of evidence-based practices, healthcare organizations need to invest in research and make use of available data (Orta et al., 2018). Furthermore, clinicians need to be trained in how to apply evidence-based findings to their practice.

Barriers that might hold nursing practice from achieving this goal include the lack of research in some areas of nursing, nurses’ heavy workload, and the difficulty of incorporating research into practice (Alatawi et al., 2020).The impact of lack of research in some areas of nursing can be significant. For example, without research, nurses may not be aware of the most effective treatments for certain conditions or diseases. This can lead to poorer patient outcomes and higher rates of morbidity and mortality. In addition, without research, nurses may not be able to keep up with the latest advances in nursing care, which can also lead to poorer patient outcomes. Lack of research can impact the quality of nursing care overall, as well as the perception of nursing by the public.

Difficulties in incorporating research into practice may interfere with evidence-based practices in nursing because research findings may not be generalizable to clinical practice (Alqahtani et al., 2020). Studies may be conducted using outdated research methods and study populations, and findings from research studies may not be adopted into routine clinical practice because of lack of feasibility or patient preference. Besides, there is often a disconnect between researchers and practitioners, which can interfere with transferring knowledge from research to practice. Researchers often have little understanding of the real-world constraints that impact practitioners’ ability to adopt new interventions into their clinical practice. On the other hand, practitioners may find it difficult to translate complex research findings into everyday care.

Nurses can address these barriers by seeking out and using research evidence, collaborating with other nurses and healthcare professionals, and promoting evidence-based nursing practices. Many hospitals and health care organizations are committed to evidence-based practice and are working to promote it within their facility
