Social Determinants of Health/Access to Care
Most people are unable to access healthcare services due to lack of insurance, an inadequate number of healthcare providers and clinics within their geographical area, and the inability to pay (Sadock et al., 2018). Nurse practitioners (NPs) have made a great process in bridging this gap by boosting access to healthcare services through expanding their practice to a variety of settings such as home health, retail clinics, school nursing, federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), home visiting, and school-based health centers in addition to nurse-managed health centers. Generally, NPs can help with the provision of high-quality and affordable options for primary care services to boost healthcare access.
According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), NPs are required to be involved in the development of strategies aimed at promoting the highest level of care to everyone (Wheeler, 2020). As such, they possess the role of contributing towards the establishment of policies, operational procedures, and practice guidelines that promote the quality of care provided but at a reduced cost, affordable by the common man (Hassmiller, 2021). For instance, NPs can help make adjustments to the Affordable Care Act, to promote insurance coverage to certain medical procedures, and increase the age under which children can enjoy the insurance benefits of their parents to promote affordability of care services. Generally, nurses are the pivot in the promotion of equitable care services to everyone.
Federal policies and state laws are part of the barriers restricting nurses from contributing fully to satisfying the health needs of American citizens (Sadock et al., 2018). Given that access to health is directly related to the number of registered nurses available, organizing a campaign for action to push for the lifting of such restrictions will help promote access to quality care services at affordable prices. This will promote access to care services even in the underserved areas of the country and rural settings due to the increased number of available qualified NPs.
