Scope of practice refers to the services a qualified healthcare professional such as a nurse or physician is considered competent to perform and authorized to undertake based on their professional license. Nursing professional organizations have taken the role of protecting and advancing the scope of practice for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) across states (Henni et al., 2021). APRNs should be allowed to practice to the full extent of their training and abilities to meet the growing healthcare needs and deliver the most efficient and quality care to patients. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the scope of my future advanced registered nurse role, explore influential professional nursing organizations, and examine a controversial or evolving issue likely to affect my future role.
Scope of Practice for Future Role
My future advance registered nurse role is a nurse educator. Masters-prepared nurse educators work as nursing school faculties and in clinical settings as clinical preceptors, instructors, and staff development officers. Nurse educators train nursing students on nursing knowledge and skills and equip experienced nurses with advanced and specialized knowledge and skills (Christensen & Simmons, 2019). The nurse educator is involved in curriculum development, scholarship, research, and consultancy services to education and healthcare facilities. Nurse educators adapt the nursing curriculum and teaching methods regarding innovations in nursing science and current changes in the healthcare environment (Christensen & Simmons, 2019). Furthermore, nurse educators working in the school environment are involved in research, publish scholarly journal articles, make presentations at nursing conferences, write grant proposals, and are involved in public policy and community service.
On the other hand, nurses working in the healthcare setting are involved in planning and executing staff development interventions for nurses to promote professional development. They work alongside nurse managers to develop, implement, and evaluate continuous nursing education programs for nurses in healthcare organizations (Coffey & White, 2019). Therefore, my future role as a nurse educator will involve combining my clinical knowledge skills and expertise with the art and science of teaching.

The National League for Nursing (NLN) defines the scope of masters-prepared nurse educators. Its mission is to promote excellence in nursing education to create a strong and diverse nursing workforce (NLN, 2020). NLN is also responsible for certifying Nurse Educator teaching programs in learning institutions. In addition to defining the scope, NLN is also involved in reinforcing institutions and students to use NLN’s Core Competencies of nursing education practice (NLN, 2020). These competencies outline the scope of practice for nurse educators and serve as a framework for designing curricula for nurse educator programs.
Professional Nursing Organizations That are Most Influential in Advancing the Scope and Influence of Advanced Nursing
The three professional nursing organizations deemed most influential in expanding the scope and influence of advanced nursing practice include the American Nurses Association (ANA), the Nevada Nurses Association, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). The ANA is the leading professional organization that represents the interests of registered nurses in the US. ANA is regarded as the strongest voice for the nursing profession and is at the front of improving nurses’ welfare and enhancing healthcare for all populations (ANA, n.d.). It achieves this by promoting high standards of nursing practice and a safe and ethical working environment for nurses. Besides, it supports nurses’ health and wellness at the workplace and is at the forefront of advocating health care issues affecting nurses and the general public. Furthermore, one of the initiatives of ANA is to defend and advance the scope of practice for nurses (ANA, n.d.). ANA represents APRNs’ interests and calls for the removal of all barriers to APRNs’ full practice authority.
Nevada Nurses Association (NNA) is a nursing professional organization dedicated to addressing the issues and challenges faced by nurses. It represents all registered nurses in Nevada, including nurse educators, staff nurses, nurse practitioners, public health nurses, and school nurses. NNA’s mission is to foster professional nursing practice through nursing leadership, continuing education, legislation, and community service (NNA, n.d.). It also seeks to advocate for better health and high-quality health care for Nevada residents. NNA is influential in advancing the scope of advanced registered nurses since it monitors the evolving role of the professional nurse NNA considers itself an association of registered nurses working for registered nurses. Besides, NNA takes a comprehensive and multi-purpose approach to advocating the needs of all registered nurses in all settings (NNA, n.d.). NNA partners with ANA to offer an influential platform to assist professional nurses in Nevada achieve their professional goals.
AACN is the national voice for academic nursing. It strives to create quality standards for nursing education, help nursing schools implement them, and influence the nursing profession to better health care. As the united voice for academic nursing, AACN acts as a catalyst for excellence and innovation in nursing education, practice, and research (AACN, n.d.). Furthermore, it strives to advance the influence of advanced nursing by working to advance public policy on nursing. It takes a forefront position in securing continuous federal support for nursing education and research. It also shapes legislative and regulatory policies impacting nursing schools.
Most Appealing Professional Organization
ANA is the most appealing of the three professional organizations. It is the most appealing because it represents the interests of all registered nurses and supports them in reaching their full potential. My worldview and philosophy of care are that nurses should strive to provide high-quality care backed by evidence-based practice, and thus, they should be provided with adequate resources to facilitate their work. The ANA mission aligns with this worldview since it focuses on leading the nursing profession to shape the future of nursing and healthcare. ANA’s empowerment activities can ensure that nurses are provided with the resources needed to provide high-quality, evidence-based patient care. ANA membership would help develop my career since it provides its embers with career development resources.
An Evolving Issue Most Likely to Impact Scope of Practice or Role
Advanced healthcare technology is an evolving issue likely to impact my nurse educator role in the future. Technology is continuously integrated into the healthcare system with constant advancement and modernization. Healthcare technology is widely embraced due to its associated benefits of increasing patient safety, decreasing adverse events, and improving providers’ compliance with practice guidelines (Alotaibi & Federico, 2018). It is a vital tool for improving healthcare quality and safety. In addition, technology is continuously being incorporated into the classroom setting to help overcome teaching barriers and foster the relationship between nurse educators and nursing students. The increased adoption and implementation of technology within the classroom settings ensure learners are adequately prepared to enter the nursing workforce (Huddle, 2019). Therefore, nurse educators must embrace and be competent in healthcare technology.
Healthcare technology could influence the nursing profession by improving nurses’ work efficiency and communication. The advanced technologies can reduce the chances of human error that occur when nurses are understaffed and experiencing burnout. The technologies simplify routine nursing procedures and help reduce errors at the bedside. Advanced healthcare technology could also affect patients by improving healthcare outcomes through enhanced quality and safety of care (Alotaibi & Federico, 2018). The issue matters to advanced registered nurses since they will be required to be competent in using the advanced healthcare technologies in their line of work.
Nurse educators practice in both healthcare and school settings. The scope of practice of nurse educators in classroom settings includes scholarship, developing curriculum research, consultancy, publication of journals, and public policy. In the healthcare setting, nurse educators are involved in the continuous professional development of nurses and act as instructors and preceptors for nursing students. The National League for Nursing defines the scope of practice for nurse educators and certification. Besides, the ANA advocates for nurses to be granted full scope of practice across states and is thus an appealing organization to join. Nurse educators need to be well-versed with healthcare technology in clinical and classroom settings.
