Nursing Theory in Patient Care Paper

Nursing Theory in Patient Care Paper

Nurses use theories to get care guidelines as a nursing theory is at the heart of the nursing practice and patient care delivery. Nursing theories allow the nursing profession to carve out its niche in a complex and evolving healthcare environment. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the essence of using a nursing theory in patient care.

Purpose of Applying Nursing Theory to Patient Care

A nursing theory is an organized body of knowledge that defines nursing, what nurses do, and why they do it. Younas and Quennell (2019) assert that the use of a nursing theory is essential in patient care as it provides guided practice interventions to enhance the quality of nursing care by enabling nurses to articulate what they do for patients. Nursing theories provide an effective foundation for nursing practice and allows practitioners to use suggested guidelines and processes to implement and improve patient care.

Nurses apply theories in patient care to improve overall care interventions and successful outcomes. The frameworks offered by different nursing theories assists in shaping the parameters of patient care delivery. The implication is that through the application of nursing theories, nurses attain effective approaches to improving care delivery and ensuring that patients follow set guidelines to attain quality care. For instance, the Neuman Systems model is founded on the idea of treating a patient holistically based on the aspect that a patient’s needs can affect their entire self-nature. Therefore, a nurse can use the theory to offer guided practice interventions focused on holistic care.

At the core of nursing theory is the distinction between nursing as a separate discipline from medicine and other associated science. Therefore, a nursing theory allows nurses to enhance the understanding of their patients and needs. Theory provides different approaches to assist a nurse provide care that respects patients and their uniqueness as well as improves their outcomes. Imperatively, nursing theories is meaningful to my current practice as it offers a basis for effective care delivery and meeting of patient needs (Adib-Hajbaghery & Tahmouresi, 2018). Nursing takes cognizance of a person, their health and environment and the nursing approaches to attain expected quality care outcomes.

Application of a Nursing Theory before Planning and Providing Care

Nursing theories can be applied before planning and providing care based on individual patient cases. Care planning entails knowing a patient’s diagnosis, interventions, and possible prognosis as well as salient factors that may affect their overall response to prescribed therapies. Planning using a nursing theory means that the nurse evaluates the current patient condition, the best approach to care, and incorporation of evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions to improve outcomes. Providing care means that a nurse is using the selected interventions to offer comfort and relieve pain and stress related to the condition. In this case, a nursing theory offers processes or steps to be followed and change to be expected in a patient receiving care.

Theory that Best Reflects my Personal View of Nursing

My personal view of nursing is that nursing offers an opportunity for nurses to interact with patients and help them attain a balance among their different functions that face hurdles when sick or ill. My view is that patient care entails four main aspects that include health, the person, the environment and nursing. All these are fundamental in providing care to patients. Therefore, Imogene King’s Theory of Goal attainment depicts my personal view of nursing. The nurse is part of a patient’s environment and effective care occurs when a nurse-patient relationship focuses on meeting the goals for good health (Alejandro, 2018). The theory has been assistive to me in planning and providing care to patients as it implores nurses to change their perspective and create effective and mutual relationship with patients to improve care.

Conclusion

Nursing theories offer frameworks and models for nurses to offer care in an effective manner. These theories guide the nursing practice and effective use of evidence to attain quality care outcomes. Nurses require these frameworks to plan care interventions and improve overall patient outcomes.
