Nursing Theory Essay

Watson’s Theory of Transpersonal Caring was created by Jean Watson from 1975 to 1979 from her perception of nursing. Watson’s expectation when developing the theory was that it would help differentiate nursing science as a separate and vital entity from medical science. The theory focuses on how nurses demonstrate care to their patients. The theory proposes that caring is fundamental to nursing practice, and it better promotes health than a basic medical intervention (Wei & Watson, 2018). Watson believed that a holistic approach to health care is fundamental to the practice of caring. The theory has four key concepts: human being, health, society/environment, and nursing. The human being is a valued entity that should be cared for, nurtured, respected, understood, and helped.

The theory has ten carative factors which interplay with the four concepts to establish a caring relationship. The use of individual parts and factors of the theory to conduct a collective process that promotes the desired outcomes in patient care supports the theory’s logical adequacy (Wei & Watson, 2018). Watson’s theory provides a generalized framework for nursing that can be used in various situations in patient care. It positions the patient in the perspective of the family, community, and culture and puts the patient as the focus for nursing practice instead of focusing on the technology. The theory is simple to use since it outlines that the science of caring is based on ten carative factors. Watson’s Theory is widely utilized, which proves its generalizability (Wei & Watson, 2018). It has been previously applied in geriatrics, community health nursing practice, occupational health nursing, and in care for chronic diseases. The theory’s effectiveness in these different areas of nursing practice supports its testability.

Watson’s theory can be used to improve the quality of psychiatric mental health practice through the Caritas process. The theory’s carative factors are a vital element of a process that promotes a personal connection to develop on a spiritual level, promoting care transactions (Pajnkihar et al., 2018). Consecutively, the care transactions are likely to improve psychiatric patients’ well-being and quality of life through interventions and the Caritas process. The theory is applicable in NP practice since the NP engages their emotions in the caring relationship while at the same time focusing on the patient’s physical and health needs.
