Nursing Informatics Competency Essay

Nursing Informatics Competency Essay

Nursing informatics competency refers to a tolerable degree of knowledge, skill, and ability to complete distinct informatic tasks (Khezri & Abdekhoda, 2019). Acquisition of these competencies is crucial for nurses, particularly in this era where technology forms the foundation of healthcare transformation. A TANIC tool is an elemental tool for assessing nursing informatics competencies and focuses on three key competency areas namely basic computer, information literacy, and clinical information management. Surprisingly, all the areas are interdependent and equally important.

Following post-TANIC self-assessment, basic computer and information literacy competencies are necessary for my future role as a nurse. Basic computer competency consists of the very fundamental competencies that introduce one to the technological world. These include typing and data entry, operating system basics, web browser basics, hardware basics, and computer communication (Khezri & Abdekhoda, 2019). Being competent in the aforementioned areas enables APN to foster evidence-based practice which ultimately leads to increased efficacy, job satisfaction, and quality care. Meanwhile, core principles of information literacy include information literacy fluency, access to information via appropriate tools,  evaluation of the quality of information, and ethical communication of synthesized and new knowledge (McGowan et al., 2020). These core principles facilitate problem-solving and effective communication in healthcare and are hence crucial for an APN.

In keeping up with the demands on nursing informatics, I managed to strengthen my basic computer and information literacy competencies. Honestly, I have significantly increased my typing speed as well as presentation, communication, and data visualization skills. Similarly, I have enhanced my ability to access information needed efficiently and effectively, evaluate the relevance of information, and use the information effectively to enhance my patient management. Finally, I have also learned to determine the nature and extent of information needed to safeguard patients’ privacy at all costs.
