NURS 6053 Module 1 Week01 Discussion: Health Issue/ Stressor Essay

Nurses are a critical component of healthcare and comprise the largest section of the health professionals. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics over 275,000 additional nurses will be required between 2020 and 2030. Consequently, the nursing shortage is a national health issue or stressor that impacts quality care delivery among patients and providers. Close to 1 million nurses will retire in the next one year and this will translate to about 15% of the current workforce by 2029 (Spurlock Jr., 2020). The implication is that the retiring baby boomers’ generation will necessitates the need for more nurses to take the slots left. Further, a rise I demand for healthcare across the age continuum, especially among the elderly, continues to necessitate the need for more nurses and the current shortage across the country. The reforms in the healthcare sector based on legislations like the Affordable Care Act of 2010 and implementation of innovative care delivery models that include value-based care and accountable care organizations (ACOs) means that more providers are required to enhance access to healthcare services across the nation. The concept of patient-centered care as an evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions illustrates the need for more providers to offer culturally-sensitive care to diverse patient populations. As such, these factors are the leading causes of nursing shortage that has serious implications on the quality of care delivery and patient safety.

Nursing shortage as a national health stressor has significant negative effects on the delivery of care and patient safety. Nursing shortage leads to a rise in patient mortality, increased cases of nurse burnout, and insufficient nursing staff in hospitals. Nursing shortage lowers the quality of care delivered to patients as nurses are strained because of the workload leading to limited concentration levels.

Nursing shortage may impact my work setting in various ways. Due to nursing shortage, the available nurses will work long hours leading to fatigue, burnout, and poor patient outcomes. Again, the insufficient staffing levels lowers the quality of care as nurses will have more patients to cater to despite the ability to perform at a certain degree (Haryanto, 2019). Nursing shortage may lead to high turnover as nurses leave the facility due to the workload and the burnout that they may experience. This means that nurses will feel attracted to facilities that do not have huge workloads to affect their overall ability to perform and deliver quality care. Lastly, the facility is susceptible to a rise in medication errors and affects overall patient safety and satisfaction.

Addressing nursing shortage is a critical aspect of ensuring that patients get quality care services. In this case, the health facility has implemented various measures including flexible working schedules, hiring of new nurses and training them adequately to meet care demands (Haddad et al., 2022). The facility has also leveraged technology through telehealth to offer care to patients in remote areas and reduce the cost of physician visit. The use of collaborative practice and leveraging of evidence-based practice interventions are critical aspects that the facility has considered to enhance the staffing levels and address the issue of nursing shortage (Haryanto, 2019). Organizations like mine need to focus on EBP interventions and having better environment for employees to feel valued so that they improve the level of patient care.

In this Discussion, you examine a national healthcare issue and consider how that issue may impact your work setting. You also analyze how your organization has responded to this issue.

To Prepare:

Review the Resources and select one current national healthcare issue/stressor to focus on.
Reflect on the current national healthcare issue/stressor you selected and think about how this issue/stressor may be addressed in your work setting.

By Day 3 of Week 1
Post a description of the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected for analysis, and explain how the healthcare issue/stressor may impact your work setting. Then, describe how your health system work setting has responded to the healthcare issue/stressor, including a description of what changes may have been implemented. Be specific and provide examples.

By Day 6 of Week 1
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days who chose a different national healthcare issue/stressor than you selected. Explain how their chosen national healthcare issue/stressor may also impact your work setting and what (if anything) is being done to address the national healthcare issue/stressor.
