NURS 6051S Week 5 Discussion: Big Data Risks and Rewards Essay

The use of big data in health in general and nursing in particular is critical in attainment of quality care outcomes. According to Wang et al. (2018), big data assists in identifying care patterns and offers a wider perspective in implementing evidence-based clinical practice. The care patterns are essential as they allow nurse practitioners to know the most effective way to deal with patients and provide optimal care. Nursing informatics helps to realize patient patterns in issues like hospitalization and readmissions as well as the rates of infections. The clinical system would confer benefits to patients; leading to improved patient outcomes (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). The facility and practitioner will benefit due to better reimbursement from insurance companies as they will rely on big data to analyze quality care metrics.

While the use of big data as part of a clinical system offers benefits, there are inherent challenges as well. One of these is nurse executives getting engrossed in big data which leads to frustration. Nurses encounter increased levels of stress and pressure in processing the data with the aim of reducing costs and providing quality care to meet set metrics for value-based care (Dash et al., 2019). Analyzing big data is taxing with significant monetary costs for practitioners.

Mitigation of challenges emanating from big data usage is critical. Effective mitigation requires sufficient support from all different stakeholders, especially nurses’ participation and involvement in designing different informatics operations. Nurses must join the implementation teams and offer sufficient feedback where necessary to reduce pressure posed by increased deployment of big data in clinical systems (Wang et al., 2018). Being part of the team to offer solutions to challenges in big data utilization is essential in enhancing overall care delivery and performance.
