Translational research entails collecting knowledge from clinical and scientific trials and using it to address critical health needs of certain populations. Therefore, in translational research, practitioners and scientists move discoveries along virtual paths from the laboratory into real and practical situations with the aim of enhancing human health and quality care (Pastar et al., 2018). Through scanning journals and research articles on translational research, one journal article that I found is one from the American Journal of Translation Research. The research article by Chen and others (2021) address the use of gel wound dressings that have stem cells to treat individuals with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) and one of the leading complications associated with the chronic disease.

Millions of individuals suffer from diabetes with complications like DFUs being leading causes of foot amputation for this patient population. Using a review approach, the authors provide a summary of advancements in research concerning the use of multifunctional gel wound dressing and stem cells in the DFU treatment. The article by Chen et al. (2021) uses type 2 translational (T2) research since it is a systematic review which offers a summary of different studies about the efficacy of stem cells in helping the healing of wounds emanating from diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). T2 research produces knowledge concerning the efficacy of interventions in clinical settings. The research aims at utilizing clinical knowledge from studies to address health issues that impact target populations. The study shows how the intervention, stem cells combined with gel can help heal and treat wounds caused by diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). Translational research is the most relevant for developing and testing the efficacy of interventions to address complications associated with diabetes as chronic health condition impacting several people in communities across care and age continuum.
