I am taking my clinical practicum at Ameri-Cal Weight Clinic, a private practice run by Nurse Practitioners. It is located at 2815 Mitchell Drive, Suite 101, Walnut Creek CA. One of the clinical issues in the setting is the nursing shortage. The acute shortage of nursing workforce at the facility has increased the workload on the existing nursing staff leading to rampant cases of nurse burnout (Marć et al., 2019). Nurse burnout refers to a state of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion attributed to continued work-associated stressors such as pressure to provide quality care to a high number of patients, long working hours, need for prompt decision making, pain in caring for patients who are likely to have poor outcomes, and poor planning by management to distribute work equitably (Tawfik et al., 2019). Nurses play a crucial role in the health care system. Health care outcomes majorly rely on the excellent delivery of nursing services in the health care settings. However, nurses suffering from burnout cannot deliver quality nursing services as expected.

The first implication of nursing burnout to nursing is the concern of staff and patient safety. Staff and patient safety are critical to nursing practice. The design of health care is anchored on safety and nurses are required to comply with standardized procedures while providing care (Tawfik et al., 2019). However, when nurses experience burnout, their safety and that of patients are highly compromised. Nurse burnout causes feelings of physical and mental fatigue, fear about work, and depression for nurses. In turn, they may experience reduced cognitive functioning and be less motivated to work, thus putting their safety and patient safety at risk. The other implication of burnout is a risk of spreading health-associated infections (HAIs) (Hu et al., 2020). Although nurses are given personal protective equipment, adherence to some regulations could be compromised due to heavy workload and burnout, leading to susceptibility for the spread of HAIs.
