Mentoring is an effective way to help individuals grow professionally and at a personal level. through mentorship, mentors share perspectives, skills, attributes, experiences, and values with mentees. Mentorship ignites a desire to grow or awakes a sleepy ability that one may possess. Therefore, mentorship is a critical aspect of succeeding and attaining personal goals and objectives. A mentor that I have had in the past was my nurse manager in emergency room who helped me learn greatly about the need for nurses to focus on patient and quality care delivery (Mollahadi et al., 2018). According to my mentor, quality care leads to better interactions and appreciation between providers and patients. My mentor was dedicated and would take her time to talk to me and the entire ER team to focus on even the most delicate cases that we received. She encouraged me to focus on my goals and advance my education through motivational talks and her life journey as well as her professional experience in healthcare delivery.

My mentor used a host of leadership styles or approaches, right from charismatic to transformational. She leveraged her charisma to show that being innovative and future-oriented allow one to attain her goals and even go past the expectations. As a transformational leader, she emphasized the need to do things in a new and innovative way to inspire patient confidence in care delivery. She displayed a host of characteristics that drew me to her (Navarra et al., 2018). These include being honest, simple, compassionately, and always encouraging interpersonal interactions. I realized that as a mentor, she was humble and never wanted everyone to know that she was the nurse manager for the ER.

Effective mentor relationship is important for both the leader and the mentee as it allows them to help nature dreams and realize their visions (Van Patten & Bartone, 2019). Leaders nurture others to be effective and help them in the future. For a mentee, the relationship gives them an opportunity to learn new skills, new ways and approaches to situations. Mentees get the opportunity to build their professional networks and have better ways to interact with others at a professional level.

Sustainable outcomes are a critical feature of any successful initiative and program in different areas of society, including healthcare. Sustainable outcomes in healthcare must focus on different attributes that include use of evidence from research, especially through evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions, patient and provider engagement, transparency and value-based competition and compensation. The U.S. health care system spends over 15% of the country’s GDP. The cost of health care is thereby unsustainable because it will keep rising and demanding more resources (Mehra & Sharma, 2021). Therefore, it is essential ensure that it has sustainable outcomes that focus on patient-centered care, optimal deployment of resources to enhance capacity for change, and effective leadership for continual quality care improvement. Sustainable outcomes require consistency that emanates from better and committed as well as dedicated leadership and effective management of resources. Leaders and managers in organizations who practice leadership models like transformational leadership style encourage nurses and other providers to be innovative and develop new approaches to sustain better outcomes.

In their study, Lennox et al. (2020) highlight the importance of sustainability approaches in healthcare as essential to improving quality care outcomes for patients. Implementing projects to improve quality should ensure sustainability. Therefore, my project concerning surgical safety checklist will have sustainable outcomes for patients because it will implore providers to ensure that all necessary procedure and protocols exist to prevent any adverse event or errors. The project will be sustainable as it focuses on patient safety which is one of the primary reasons to implement initiatives to protect patients and ensure that they have better outcomes (Mortimer et al., 2018). The initiative will leverage attributes of sustainable leadership that include interpersonal skills, orientation toward change and alignment of organizational values, cultures and the nursing vision of quality care provision. The implication is that sustainable outcomes are core to quality care delivery and the proposed initiative will attain its expected goals of patient safety.
