Practicum Activities Reflection:

During weeks 10 and 11, my preceptor proposed that we focus on the adoption of appropriate leadership skills and competencies. From what has been gained through the previous weeks, it was time to put my leadership skills into practice. At this point. My preceptor was able to delegate duties that would require the application of appropriate leadership skills. For instance, through effective communication and the use of critical thinking in decision-making, I was able to coordinate an interdisciplinary team in coming up with the most effective care plan for the patient. On the other hand, I was able to witness additional competencies displayed by my preceptor as he went through his daily activities in coordinating care and ensuring excellent clinical workflow. Most of these such competencies have been described below. Currently, I strongly believe in the role of nurse leaders as servants rather than controllers or dictators (Eva et al., 2019). With servant leadership, team leaders were able to work together towards the achievement of organizational goals in promoting the safety and quality of care provided.

Application of Leadership:

From the practicum experience, I was able to identify key skills and competencies required in promoting good leadership including effective communication, professional socialization, integrity, respect, critical thinking, and professionalism. Additionally, with the adoption of the servant leadership style, I realized that personal traits such as active listening, flexibility, creativity, empathy, positivity, and reliability are crucial among nurse leaders (Jones et al., 2021). I have gained these personal traits and plan to implement them as I embark on my leadership roles in clinical practice. A good leader must always promote shared decision-making and teamwork to promote equal satisfaction among all the team members. For instance, I have always encouraged my team members to solve problems together as a team, rather than individually. For example, in case of disputes, the nurses involved must report to the nurse in charge before taking any further action. As the nurse in charge, I will listen to the argument of both sides and ensure that both parties have reconciled and are satisfied with the solution.

My evaluation plan for this practicum experience will involve four main steps. The first step will involve reviewing the initially stated practicum goals and objectives, and calculating the clinical hours completed. In the second step, I will assess whether this time was adequate in achieving my practicum goals and objective and examine the need for more time or any additional adjustments (Nordick, 2019). The third step will involve collecting feedback from my preceptor regarding my overall performance through the practicum experiences. In the last step, I will evaluate the need for any changes and come up with the most strategic adjustment plan.

The adjustment plan will mainly incorporate the general solutions to the identified shortcomings impacting the achievement of the practicum goals and objectives and clarify the next cause of action (Nordick, 2019). For instance, if time is the problem, then I will have to discuss it with my preceptor and set aside additional time to promote further learning and achievement of all my practicum goals and objective. Additional problems that might be identified include unrealistic goals, record-keeping problems, inadequate or unclear rules, and problems with strategies among others. The process of evaluation and adjustment will continue until the plan works in the achievement of the desired outcome.

Leadership Video Reflection:

The “Servant Leadership – Issue of Example” video “Servant Leadership – Issue of Rule”, teaches the modern concept of leadership, which displays managers being role models by serving others rather than controlling them. For instance, the leader does get things done by telling the employee what to do but instead motivates them to work in a team and utilize critical thinking to exhibit their full potential in getting work done (Perna, 2018). The nurse leader must serve by example by observing all the clinical practice protocols and promoting the safety and quality of care. Team members will be motivated by a leader who works with them rather than the one who controls them. The second lesson from the video mainly points out the aspect of modern leadership where managers are seen as enablers rather than dictators. When the leader serves the team, he or she does not outline roles for the employees but instead encourages them to set their personal goals aligned with the organization’s goals and exhibit their full potential in promoting the safety and quality of care provided. This health nursing staff members develop appropriate critical thinking and decision-making skills promotive innovative practice.
