Incorporating My Worldview in the Current Profession Essay

Hello, my name is XXX. I am currently working as a nocturnal hospitalist nurse practitioner at PHHospital. I have been in this position for almost four years. I handle the calls and emergencies for the 150-250 patients covered by my group in my current role. Before this, I worked in neonatal, postpartum, emergency, orthopedics, and medical-surgical units over my seven-year career as a registered nurse. I enjoyed being in each area and feel that they have helped broaden my nursing knowledge and understanding of various patient populations. I have always wanted to be in healthcare for as long as I can remember.

My nursing journey started in 2004 when I enrolled in a certified nursing assistant program. After that, I took a patient care technician certification.

I was accepted into a licensed practical nursing program in 2010. I have worked in a medical-surgical unit for about two years. After completing an LPN-RN bridge program, I started working in orthopedics and transferred to emergency after six months. I completed my bachelor of nursing in 2013. From that point, I worked in both emergency and postpartum until I completed my master’s in family nurse practitioner in 2017. I then worked in neonatal intensive until I started my current role.

My worldview is love, kindness, compassion, and treating every individual with dignity as I wish to be treated if I were in their position. I seek to offer patients the best nursing care possible in my line of work. Consequently, I continually engage in professional development programs to improve my knowledge and skills to meet the growing healthcare needs of the patient. I incorporate my worldview on love in the nursing profession by being gentle when handling patients to avoid causing more pain to patients. In addition, I try to be sensitive to the patients’ needs and be responsive to their needs. I believe that every patient is unique, and thus each patient has different needs, which the nurse should seek to identify and help patients address them. I also incorporate my worldview on love by showing understanding to patients even when they display moods such as anger, frustration, and bitterness.

I consider compassion as a fundamental element in nursing practice. Compassion is a set of four qualities humanity, wisdom, love, and empathy. I incorporate compassion in practice by being aware of situations when a patient is vulnerable or suffering. I tend to have an inner feeling about a patient’s suffering, which motivates me to help them and alleviate their suffering. I try to be empathetic when dealing with patients and their families by asking myself, “What if I was the one?” Consequently, I treat patients with dignity as I wish to be treated. I treat patients with dignity by showing respect, talking to them politely, and respecting them as individuals.

I have observed that when providers respect patients as individuals, they feel important and take major steps towards improving their health. Consequently, I involve patients in making decisions regarding their health which encourages them to take initiatives to better their health rather than leaving it to health providers. Besides, I urge my colleagues to involve patients in decision-making because it increases patients’ knowledge about their health condition and treatment plan and improves their treatment adherence.
