Future Role in Advocating for Equitable Population Health & Policies Essay
Advanced registered nurses (ARNs) have a responsibility to advance equitable population health services and policies to enhance overall healthcare and quality of life for patients and populations. Equitable population health services and policies entail three critical goals that include quality of care, better patient outcomes and reduced cost of or affordable care. Through these goals individuals and population have better health promotion strategies and focus on primary health (Cleveland et al., 2019). The Institute of Medicine in its 2010 report recommended the need for APRNs to advocate for patients by caring for them within the complex healthcare system and being allowed to practice to full level of their training and education. The implication is that nurses have an integral role to promote better healthcare interventions for their patients and health populations with the aim of lowering the disease burden and cost of care (Gormley, 2019). As patient advocates, ARNs are change agents who focus on lobbying for legislations aimed at improving healthcare quality and reducing the overall cost burden.
However, in an effort to provide care, nurses especially ARNs, can face possible barriers that include lack of organizational support, insufficient resources, and limited knowledge and awareness among nursing professionals to implement effective policies to improve population health. These barriers limit the ability of nurses to be change agents and execute important best practices in their settings to improve care and accessibility by patients. Population advocacy requires support and collaboration among all stakeholders to allow nurses impact the different aspects of care (Myers, 2020). Meeting these challenges requires one to create partnerships and collaborations with other professionals. Nurses should focus on being members of inter-professional teams to develop a common approach to care provision.
