Nursing requires individuals who are empathetic with populations’ health needs, committed to addressing inequalities and helping vulnerable populations. The connection with people’s needs enables nurses to serve people better, evaluate problems, and develop practical solutions. Two personal experiences have prepared me to work in underserved populations.
The first experience is community service with The Nassau Country Reserve Corps (MRC). MRC is a community-based, civilian volunteer program helping underserved populations and strengthening local public health opportunities. MRC thrives due to the willingness of volunteers like me, available and passionate to serving their communities when in need. When working for MRC, I assisted with taking medical histories, vaccines and medication administration and providing behavioral health support to the underserved populations in Nassau County. Helping underserved populations receive COVID-19 vaccinations has been a great experience since I have witnessed the evolution of community awareness and knowledge for this valuable population. Health education has been instrumental in helping people feel comfortable before vaccination. The experience has been rewarding to me as an aspiring nurse practitioner, and I look forward to similar opportunities for promoting health and safety.
The other experience is volunteerism with New York Recovery Network (NYRN) in August 2019. NYRN is a program of the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) with over 600 volunteers, including nurses and other professionals. Among other health care professionals, we traveled to the island of Jamaica for a medical mission to provide care to the underserved population in the Parish of Clarendon. We treated approximately 300 people in three days as we sought to enhance nurses’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes through cultural immersion for underserved populations. I would volunteer again if I get such an opportunity.
