Targeted interview questions are essential for evaluating a candidate’s ability for a specific nursing role. One of the standard interview questions I would ask a registered nurse – labor and delivery is, “what strategies would you apply to transform a negative birthing process into a positive experience?”. I developed this question because the birthing process is complex, with varied experience from one patient to another. While all mothers look forward to a positive birth experience, multiple factors impact the process. More often, mothers encounter challenges that cause a negative birth experience, such as prolonged labor, a child having abnormal heart rate, abnormal bleeding, and shoulder dystocia. A negative birthing experience has detrimental effects on the health and wellbeing of the mother. A study links negative birth experience to post-partum depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), low self-esteem on health status, recurrent thoughts of pain, and poor quality of life (Aktas & Aydın, 2019). Thus, nurses must have the competence and knowledge to turn negative birth experiences into positive ones. The interview question evaluates the nurse’s ability to utilize empathy, compassion, and effective communication skills.

I would expect the candidate to state some techniques she would use to calm the mother and assure her that everything is okay. For example, for a mother who experiences prolonged labor, it is critical for nurses to assure the patient that such cases happen and their baby is fine. Also, I would expect the nurse to state how she would show empathy so that the mother knows that the nurse understands what they are going through, which gives comfort and a positive attitude towards the whole process of birthing (Krausé et al., 2020). For example, simple acts such as rubbing the back or holding the woman’s hand make them feel comfortable and enhance the ability to cope with the challenging birth experience. The nurses need to demonstrate effective communication skills that engage the mother and keep their mind away from thinking about the problems associated with the birth process (Charitou et al., 2019).
