The purpose of this paper is to research telehealth as an emerging healthcare technology and its potential to address barriers to care. The paper focuses on telehealth to improve care provision for individuals with chronic conditions like congestive heart failure (CHF) and diabetes in rural settings.

Overview of the Emerging Technology and Role in Healthcare

Technology plays a critical role in healthcare today as it offers providers capabilities and patient access while enhancing the quality of life and care for patients and saving their lives. Telehealth entails the use of technological devices to connect virtually to provide care intervention (Alotaibi & Federico, 2017). Telehealth is the use of electronic information and communication technologies in supporting and promoting long-distance clinical health provision and education. Providers leverage digital devices and applications to offer care to patients, monitor their progress, and interact with them as an aspect of providing sufficient education.

Role of Informatics Nurse concerning Telehealth

The informatics nurse has a crucial role in dissemination of information and training nurses and other providers on the deployment of telehealth for effective care delivery, especially to patients with chronic conditions. As an innovative model, the informatics nurse should urge organizational management to educate and train nurses to use telehealth as an alternative way to provide care to patients with chronic conditions and require close monitoring (Booth et al., 2021). Informatics nurse are experts and expected to offer advice and guidance to their organizations and assist in setting up systems to incorporate all aspects of telehealth.

The informatics nurse’s role is to ascertain that their organizations leverage the benefits offered by the technology to improve care delivery across continuum.

Role of Workflow Analysis, Human Factors & User-Centered Design Concepts

Workflow analysis and human factors are important in overall success of telehealth in health care settings. Through analysis of workflow, providers can identify areas that require improvement and derive benefits from the deployment of telehealth. Human factors like human resources ensure that facilities have the necessary abilities, skills and expertise to execute better technologies to enhance the provision of care (Silva-Cardoso et al., 2017). User-centered design entails telehealth conferring benefits to end users like patients and providers. The main focus in such situations should be increased benefits to all stakeholders based on the characteristics of telehealth when integrated into the health system.

Emerging health care technologies are important in improving the quality of care and patient outcomes. These technologies like telehealth are changing the care experience for patients and supporting nurse practitioners to offer better interventions and improve accessibility. Informatics nurses have an obligation to assist the implementation of telehealth in their settings as an innovative model to improve care.
