Effectiveness of Standardized Depression Questionnaires Paper

Description of the purpose

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the experiences of older adults with depression and anxiety to understand their unique needs and adapt the system to address them.

Explanation of research design

The study used qualitative methodology. The study design was a phenomenological study as it sought to examine the lived experiences of frail older adults with depression and anxiety. The study assessed the phenomenon from the participants’ perspective, leading to subjective information on the experiences with symptoms of anxiety and depression (Frost et al., 2020).

Discussion of sample

The study sample was 28 participants, frail and older adults aged five years and above with experiences and diagnoses of depression and/or anxiety. Purposive sampling was used for sampling the respondents. The participants were drawn from the General Practitioners across the UK; the prospective respondents were invited through a mailed invitation letter. Exclusion and inclusion criteria were used to identify the appropriate respondents. The interested respondents were further screened through telephone using the 2-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale and 2-item Patient Health Questionnaire (Frost et al., 2020).

Description of data collection methods

Data were collected using structured interviews. The interviews were conducted face-to-face at convenient places for the respondents. The interviewers were health services researchers and academic GPs. The respondents had no knowledge of the expertise of the interviewers to minimize biased responses.

Summary of findings

The study revealed that the participants’ long-term experiences with depression and anxiety developed a low perception of well-being. Additionally, the respondents showed reluctance for help-seeking behaviors, and access to health care was a significant barrier. Another finding was that the respondents had limited knowledge of mental health but considered interventions that resulted in coping skills more appropriate.

Strengths of the study (minimum of 1)

  • Checking the consistency of the interview data enhanced the accuracy of the information collected, enhancing the validity and credibility of the study.
  • The study used clear inclusion and exclusion criteria to identify respondents most representative of the population of interest.
  • Researcher bias was eliminated by using multiple experts for the interview

Limitations of the study (minimum of 1)

  • The study used a small sample, making it difficult to generalize the study findings.
  • Experiences of participants with severe symptoms were not captured

Recommendations regarding potential application for future practice that are insightful and appropriate.

The authors provide recommendations on the implication for future practice, including further research to explore the effectiveness of managing depression and anxiety in frail older patients and integrating mental health care with the general practice.
