Evidence-based proposals are based on sufficient evidence supporting a given practice. As a result, the development of such proposals requires intensive research that offers valid and credible information about the specific practice. The purpose of this paper is to explore the outcomes and the research method, data collection, and statistical tests to use for my EBP project: In the perinatal women (P), will the treatment of a hypertension crisis with the recommended medication within 60 min (I), compared to current standardized practices (C) improve maternal outcomes/prevent complications (O) within 6 months (T)?

The Expected Outcomes

The project seeks to determine whether the treatment of hypertension crisis with the recommended medication within 60minutes improves the maternal outcomes among perinatal women. The evidence-based proposal seeks to improve the quality of care perinatal women with hypertension receive. The expected outcomes from the project include reduced cases of perinatal mortality, low incidences of cardiac and renal complications, low incidences of stillbirth, and finally, reduced frequencies of hospital visits due to high blood pressure (Braunthal & Brateanu, 2019). Increased frequency of hospital visits causes an increase in the medication costs and this could be a significant burden, especially to the patients from low-income families. In defining the expected outcomes from the research, it is important to explore the risks and complications associated with poor management of hypertension among perinatal women.  According to Dassah et al. (2019), preeclampsia is a condition characterized by a sudden rise in blood pressure during pregnancy and a reduction in the protein in the urine. Hypertension in pregnancy could result in heart failure, renal failure, cerebrovascular accidents, and heart attack (Braunthal & Brateanu, 2019).The fetus is at risk of asphyxiation since the amount of oxygen transferred through the placenta reduces.

The data to be used in the study will be collected from the patients’ health records. As a result, the health record from the selected institutions will serve as significant tools for the study. The participants in the study will fill informed consent and this means that information about the incidences of admission and progress can be traced from the health record documents. Secondly, questionnaires will also be used as tools for data collection. The data obtained from the interviews will be supplemented with the ones from the health records to explore whether there is a significant difference in the patient’s outcomes as far as the management of hypertension crisis among the perinatal women (Hong et al., 2019). The interview will help in exploring the complications that the patients could have developed following the hypertension crisis that could not have been captured in the health records.

The health records capture accurate information about the patient since they are used for clinical monitoring making it a valid and reliable tool for this study (Lund et al., 2021). The tool captures a lot of information that can be extracted and applied in the current research to determine whether there is a significant difference between the standard blood pressure monitoring protocols and the recommended medication within 60 minutes. Audit charts can be extracted from the tool to help in understanding the patients’ outcomes better.


Statistical Tests

The interval test will be used in the project. The purpose of using the statistical test is to determine whether the outcomes in hypertension crisis management vary in the two interventions. The trends in the patients’ outcomes before the intervention will be compared with the trends after the intervention. The statistical test is best suitable for the tool because it compares the measurable outcomes between the interventions initiated.Also, t-test analysis may be done to determine intergroup consistency.

Data Collection Method

The interview method will be used in collecting data using the questionnaire tool. Both observation and interview will be used in collecting data from the health records. The researcher will interact with the healthcare providers who would offer elaborate information on the data captured in the health record tool. The outcomes will be measured in terms of percentages and the evaluation will involve determining the changes and consistency in the data collected from different settings.

Remediation Strategies

There are cases where the outcomes may not meet the positive or expected results. In such a case, the research methodology may be analyzed for possible bias and revised accordingly (Lund et al., 2021). Alternatively, if the results persist, a comparison analysis with the findings from other studies will be done and used to conclude whether the revise the intervention or not. The research is evidence-based and so the intervention adopted must be supported with enough data.

Plan to Maintain and Extend the Proposed Solution

The maintenance of the proposal after implementation can be challenging. However, in this case, such will be achieved by engaging the healthcare providers actively because they are the primary targets. The healthcare providers must be convinced to implement and sustain the proposed solution (Sharplin et al., 2019). Posters and pamphlets will be used to constantly communicate and remind the healthcare providers to adopt the recommended medication within 30 minutes to promote better health outcomes for perinatal women.


The selected data collection methods and tools will help in measuring the outcomes of the proposed intervention. Evidence-based practice is based on data collected that support or discourage a given practice. The findings from the research will be used to promote or terminate the implemented intervention.
