EBP Project Proposal: Implementation Plan Essay

The implementation of an evidence-based practice project proposal is the most important section or part of such an undertaking and requires involvement of resources, time, evaluation strategy and overall effectiveness to meet the target population. Young adult patients who engage in excessive alcohol use require effective interventions to lower the number of standard drinks with the aim of reducing their chances of being alcoholics (Crane et al., 2018). Therefore, the implementation of the intervention of using smartphone apps will be implemented in the selected setting. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the setting, timelines, resources needed, the intervention delivery process, data collection plan and management of barriers, facilitators and challenges. The paper will also cover the feasibility plan and maintenance of the project.

Setting

Smartphone apps are installed software components with different interfaces and can be deployed in any place with the users. The targeted population or research subjects will download the apps from respective sites from the providers. This means that recruited subjects will be required to download an app that will be recommended by the project team to monitor their alcohol intake. In their study, Colbert et al. (2020) show that smartphone apps can help individuals manage their alcohol consumption. Again, using a mixed-methods evaluation of smartphone apps, Attwood et al. (2017) demonstrate that the intervention can help reduce alcohol consumption. All these studies show that the setting for the intervention is downloading the app on one’s mobile device. However, for collection of necessary and meaningful data, project’s implementation will have a backup and data monitoring center at hospital’s substance use control unit and rehabilitation unit. The selected participant will be under surveillance for the entire duration of the project (Crane et al., 2018). Specifically, ten staff members from the unit will be involved in the implementation. There will be a consent or approval form before the implementation process and all participants and providers will sign the form to indicate voluntary and willingness to participate.

The implementation duration for the project is six months. However, a month before the real roll out, different activities will occur to ensure that the project yields expected outcomes. The formation of a multidisciplinary team will be a critical activity and will occur during the first week of that month. The second week will entail collecting resources needed in the implementation process while training of the staff will happen in the third week to ensure that participants are equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to implement the intervention.

The fourth week will involve identification of any possible barriers, ensuring that recruited participants have access to smartphone or devices and have downloaded the recommended app (Crane et al., 2018). The fourth week also entails making any changes to the initial plans based on emerging issues before the real roll out. Therefore, the six months’ duration will be dedicated to ensuring that participants in the project will start monitoring their alcohol use and using telehealth, the implementation team will have access to the data. The information will then be keyed in corrected to monitor changes in alcohol consumption by respective participant.

Budget and Resources

The success of this EBP project will depend primarily on availability of needed resources. Human resources will be required to implement the project. The resources will comprise of competent nursing staff, especially informatics nurses, a nurse manager for the unit and behavioral nurse practitioners like psychiatric nurses. The other component of the human resource will be information technology personnel in the unit who will help in analyzing the data and providing a substantive analysis each week and making monthly reports. The engagement of nurse practitioners and clinical behavioral practitioners with necessary skills will enhance the success of the implementation process. Further, defining the roles and responsibilities of each team member will enhance the overall performance for effective implementation. The duties and responsibilities assigned should align with one’s qualifications and competences.

The required financial resources will be used to enrolling participants in the project, ensuring that they have connectivity to the Internet for the entire duration of the project, and training of the staff on different aspects of the implementation (Barber, 2018). The funds will also be used to compensate trainers and purchase of necessary equipment and devices to monitor individual participant’s data and use of the application. The required budget for the implementation is available in the appendix section of this implementation plan.

Data Collection Design: Qualitative or Quantitative

Data is a critical component of any EBP project proposal implementation as it validates the developed hypothesis and offers effective feedback to assess the overall effectiveness of an intervention. Data designs can either be qualitative or quantitative based on the nature of a project and the anticipated outcomes. The EBP focuses on young adult patients who are excessive alcohol users with the aim of reducing consumption within six months using smartphone apps. Therefore, an effective data design would be quantitative based on the nature of this project. The project is interested in identifying possible behavioral change through the interventions on the number of standard drinks that a participant can take once using the app.

The project’s effectiveness will be based on its ability to attain a behavioral change for the participating subjects. This implies that if they reduce the number of standard drinks, then it will demonstrate that the project is effective. In their study, Mubin et al. (2022) observe that smartphone apps can help reduce alcohol consumption among targeted population. While the study focused on alcohol cessation apps in Google Play Store, it suggests that self-control type apps have increased possibilities of attaining positive consumer behavioral change and reduction in the quantity of alcohol consumed.

Methods and Instruments

At the core of the methods and instruments will be the deployment of technology supported smartphone apps that will be monitored by both the patients and the multidisciplinary team led by the nurse manager and psychiatric nurse practitioner in charge of the unit. The use of the app will be monitored each day, or on days indicated by a participant when he or she is bound to use alcohol, either at home or in a club (Tyler, 2019). The second instrument would be an audit tool that will chart all the information at different dates for each patient to identify any significant change pattern based on using the app in their respective settings. The audit tool will monitor effective implementation by participants and the selected team in the facility by identifying changes in reported data.

Intervention Delivery Process

The delivery of the intervention process will entail members of the project team, including the nurse manager and the psychiatric nurse practitioner, the informatics nurse, and the selected nurses who will be trained on data analysis skills. Training of the personnel will ensure that they have effective skills to read and record data from the participants (Barber, 2018). The delivery process will also entail increased integration of data management skills for all providers in the facility as a long-term measure to tackle any deficiencies in using smartphone apps for different health conditions that may present at the facility.

Stakeholders to Implement the Plan

The stakeholders required in implementing this plan are varied. They include the project manager who will be the nurse manager for the unit, the psychiatric nurse practitioner who will lead the team in implementing the proposed intervention, and the selected staff who will comprise of informatics nurses and other nurses in the unit (Tyler, 2019). The organizational management will also be critical stakeholders as they will provide approval and resources to roll out the project. The participants will also be critical stakeholders as they will provide data to demonstrate the efficacy and effectiveness of the smartphone apps to reduce excessive alcohol consumption.

Potential Barriers or Challenges and Overcoming Them

EBP project proposal implementation can face a host of barriers that will require effective strategies to mitigate for the project to achieve the intended outcomes or deliverables. The possible barriers may include need for effective training, time limitation due to the existing workload among the providers, having effective teamwork and relationship to implement the project, and sufficient organizational support. Further, resistance to change may also occur if the project is implemented in other units within the organization.

The organization and the project team can address these challenges or barriers by adhering to the set time plan to avoid project creep and need for additional resources, effective communication to ensure that all involved understand the project’s goals and intentions, and engagement and participation of all stakeholders to have a significant acceptance and support (Barber, 2018). These interventions will ensure that the project team focuses on effective delivery of outcomes. Building a community of implementers will be essential for leaders like the nurse manager and the psychiatric nurse practitioner who will be at the helm of the implementation.

Feasibility of the Implementation Plan

The feasibility of this implementation plan is based on a cost benefit approach whereby the team and organization will consider the overall cost of its execution versus the expected benefits (Barber, 2018). Imperatively, the project’s cost would be relatively lower compared to the benefits as the intervention is aimed at reducing susceptibility to excessive alcohol consumption by the targeted population. The facility would offer better services to patients while the organization will enhance its reputation as one that focuses on interventions to reduce the alcohol consumption.

Conclusion

The implementation of this intervention (EBP project proposal) to reduce alcohol consumption is critical to the patients, especially in efforts to mitigate the substance abuse disorders and need for behavioral change among addicted users. The proposed project is key to attaining better health outcomes and helping the affected individuals to attain self-control when consuming alcohol. The project team will ensure that the intervention provides benefits to all involved stakeholders.
