My local health department is the Cleveland Department of Public Health (CDPH), a local public health urgency serving the city of Cleveland, Ohio. The CDPH is located at the 2nd and 3rd Floors, 75 Erieview Plaza, Cleveland, Ohio 44114, US. Phone number: (216) 664-2300; Fax: (216) 664-2197 (The Cleveland Department of Public Health, 2022). The mission of the CDPH is to enhance the quality of life in the Cleveland city through the promotion of healthy behaviors, prevention of diseases, safeguarding the environment, and ensuring the city is healthy for living, working, and playing (CDPH, 2022).
The CDPH was officially founded in the year 1910 and tasked with the primary role of improving the quality of life in Cleveland City through various initiatives mentioned above (CDPH, 2022). Currently, the CDPH comprises various programs providing health, clinical, environmental promotion, and population-based services. The department has 180 full- and part-time workers and operates on an annual budget of 21 million.
The current public health commissioner is Frances Mills who was appointed in 2021 on an interim basis following the resignation of former commissioner Persis Sosiak (WKSU, 2022). Mills is a graduate of John Carroll University and is currently pursuing a doctorate at the Ashland Theological Seminary. She is a veteran at the Public Health Department and has also served as the director of the CDPH’s department of community health initiatives. She has also served as Deputy Director of the Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services Board at the department.
CDPH provides various programs such as health, clinical, environment promotion, and population-based services. The department also ensures superior services and resources through a range of partnerships in the larger Cleveland community. For instance, CDPH works partners with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, Case Western Reserve University, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Metro Health Medical Center among others. These partnerships provide the pillars of successful preventive public health services to the residents of Cleveland City and the surrounding community (CDPH, 2022). The roles of public health nurses in community health include a focus on disability or injury, prevention of diseases, maintaining population health, and health promotion.

The department’s emergency planning components include participating in disaster preparedness training and activities to assess local emergency response during and post disasters, acts of terrorism, and accidents. It also coordinates the Cuyahoga County Medical Reserve Corps. The department is also a member of the Cuyahoga County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC). The health service that should be added is contact tracing. The major focus of CDPH is public health. However, the contact tracing operations at the department are poor.
