BSN Reflection on Art and Science Courses

Throughout the course, various BSN PSLO were demonstrated. One of them is “Provide holistic, culturally competent care for individuals, families, and populations through health promotion and disease prevention across the lifespan and healthcare continuum” (Jayasekara et al., 2018). The completed arts and science course has been key in demonstrating progression toward achieving the PSLO. For example, during the courses, various topics were covered, such as cultural diversity, the art of healthcare, and literature, which have been key in helping the development of empathy and culturally competent practice, hence setting me on the path of achieving this particular PSLO. Some of the class activities undertaken included visual observation and role-play depicting offering care to culturally diverse patients.

The completion of Art and Science courses has been an eye-opening journey as I have learned various important concepts. One of the concepts which stood out is communication. The completion of the courses prompted me to have a different perspective regarding communication. I learned that effective communication is key for clinical reasoning and improving the patient-nurse relationship as well as the working relationship with other professionals (Vega & Hayes, 2019). I learned that it is also key to communicate objectively in writing as other professionals and patients may need to access the written reports. Therefore, such written materials have to be clear and the language as objective as possible. It is worth noting that there are still areas of future learning that must be met to meet all the PSLOs. For example, I need to be more competent in incorporating the best practices and the most current nursing evidence when making practice decisions and for clinical reasoning. The implication is that I have to be on the lookout always and be as updated as possible.

The General Education Competencies are also are demonstrated through the Art and Science course. One of them is cultural competence, which is demonstrated by understanding philosophies that represent behavioral, emotional, and social attributes of individuals and the community. The art and science courses also demonstrate my progression towards achieving it. For example, various topics covered during the course are key in learning how to appreciate individual differences and community beliefs which are key in offering culturally competent care and empathizing with the patients to improve their healing process and care outcomes (Vega & Hayes, 2019). Various class activities were undertaken to help complete the identified GEC. For example, a group internet search was conducted in class on the communities living in our region to unveil some of the cultural practices, beliefs, and other ways of life which can impact care. In addition, we also checked some of the myths and how to address them while attending to these patients. Simulation was also used as an activity to help achieve competency.

Achieving the BSN essentials is a requirement for nurses. One of the selected entails is essential VI, “Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration for Improving Patient Health Care Outcomes.” This essential has a relationship with learning arts and science courses. For example, one of the central concepts learned is communication (Arnold & Boggs, 2019). Therefore, in learning the same, a nurse sets on the path of achieving the essential of interprofessional communication and collaboration for improving patient health care outcomes. Such effective communication is also key in resolving conflicts and fostering teamwork. One of the activities completed includes written formative tests to assess understanding of effective communication. The other activity entailed watching various videos depicting interprofessional communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution sessions.

Learning in art and science courses will also impact my future role as a BSN nurse. For example, in learning art and science courses, I will be able to effectively improve and use my observation skills. Central to correct diagnosis is observation. Therefore, I will become more adept at observations and eliminate the urge to make assumptions when observation could have led to a better diagnosis. I will also be better at the art of empathy and communication.
