Although Oliver Goldsmith and Jonathan Swift had two unique writing styles, their passion for literature and desire for a better world, and their focus on issues affecting society are striking the same. Their lives also have a resemblance based on their humble beginning, living through hardships and eventually attaining success. They remain among the most famous writers of their time. Both Goldsmith and Swift condemned the social evils of their time but used different approaches and focused on different issues (Burney & Gretna, p.185). The purpose of this essay is to compare their approaches to social criticism. The essay compares their use of parody to highlight social issues that were happening at their time.

Jonathan Swift and Oliver Goldsmith used their literary works to censure the functioning of the British social orders and the treatment of indigents among them. These authors used parody to condemn the absence of empathy among the social orders. For instance, in his story “A Modest Proposal,” Swift suggests that the hungry Irish should stuff and pitch their one-year-old children at the table of well-off English administrators and rule in Ireland. Swift asserts that these children should be gourmet table delights because of the refusal by the English to help the Irish to address the socioeconomic challenges that they were facing.

Swift’s contention in “A Modest Proposal” shows high levels of satire and irony for the rulers. The pursuers get stunned by his proposal to pitch starving children eat them as a means of taking care of Irish issues that include their neediness and starvation at the hands of their English controllers. His sarcastic approach leads to fun and make people laugh. Gulliver’s Travels depicts the intriguing adventures of a small person and his encounters with different types of people that he describes as monsters due to their physique (Prendergast p3). The book provides a sharp political parody as it addresses critical issues like religion, legislative matter and mission for individuals to feel the worth of life.

They employ parody through satire to better their society as they display their discontent of the happenings at the time (El-Sayed p.1). Goldsmith uses parody in his works that were mainly drama and poetry as demonstrated by plays like “She Stoops to Conquer”. However, Swift uses the style in his great works like “A Modest Proposal” and “Gulliver’s Travels” to demonstrate the indecencies that exist in society and their detrimental effects on different individuals. The authors employ parody in distinct manner to highlight what they believe is critical issues that require solutions in early society.

Jonathan Swift and Oliver Goldsmith were influential authors of their time and employed different styles and approaches to their literary works. While it is evident that Swift’s focus was mainly the use of stories, Goldsmith employs plays and poetry to highlight social evils and indecencies that affected society at the time. The two authors use parody through satire and sarcasm to depict critical issues that affected society at their time. The implication is that through their utilization of this approach, they conveyed important social messages and demonstrated their willingness to help society change for the majority’s benefit.
