Benchmark-Personal Worldview Paper

The nursing profession and healthcare sector are dynamic and require a capable leader to inspire change and meet the changing health needs of individuals and populations. Leadership models and styles play a critical role in the overall success of an organization’s attainment of set goals and objectives. Imperatively, nursing and healthcare leaders need to understand their leadership styles so that they can do a self-assessment to determine their effectiveness (Luu et al., 2019). By understanding one’s leadership style, nurse leaders can appreciate their influence or impact on others and determine areas of improvement. Having the awareness will assist a leader to know the direction to develop goals and a training plan to enhance their competencies.  The purpose of this paper is to describe my leadership model and personal worldview and their impact on nursing care delivery and quality patient outcomes.

Part A: Model of Leadership

The level of leadership effectiveness is based on the model or style of leadership utilized by a leader. Leadership styles are approaches that a leader applies in their roles and responsibilities in running organizations and leading their teams, especially multidisciplinary teams in healthcare settings. My leadership style or model is charismatic leadership. Charismatic leadership is founded on effective and robust communication skills, persuasiveness, and a bit of charm to help a leader get the most out of their teams and organizations. Charismatic leaders are passionate, possess charisma, and have strong convictions based on a deep connection to their work. Through this approach, they inspire the same conviction in their followers or teams (Castellanos, 2018). Charismatic leaders have an intense commitment to their work and evoke strong emotions from their teams and followers which encourages not only emotions but also action and a strong focus on problem-solving abilities and skills. The implication is that a charismatic leader is essential in nursing in particular and healthcare in general.

In their study, Moura et al. (2019) assert that charismatic leadership is essential for nursing professionals as it allows them to generate a positive influence on followers, particularly during medical emergencies, crises, and even when implementing change. Further, employees consider charismatic leaders as role models, develop a strong affective attachment to them, and perform beyond their expected roles and responsibilities. The implication is that as a charismatic leader, my focus is to motivate followers to attain their goals and improve overall performance in the organization. Through this approach, employees improve their morale, commitment, and motivation to perform better, especially during crisis moments in the organization.

Charismatic Leadership Compared to Other Leadership Styles

Charismatic leadership style is a critical model for healthcare providers due to traits, skills, and actions exhibited by individuals like me who possess this leadership approach. Charismatic leaders are forward-thinking when setting goals, possess the ability to articulate issues due to their strong communication skills, clear vision and openness to risk-taking, and ability to tap into people’s emotions (Zajac et al., 2021). Therefore, charismatic leadership compares to servant leadership, transformational leadership, and visionary leadership.

Comparison to Servant Leadership

Servant leaders possess exceptional interpersonal skills to lead and the humility to recognize that they are not in positions to command others. servant leaders serve first and prioritize the needs and interests of others before themselves. Servant leadership is people-centered as the leaders believe that enhancing the ability of followers leads to better outcomes. servant leaders inspire their teams and followers through their values and behaviors. Similarly, charismatic leaders inspire followers by demonstrating a positive role model. Servant leaders inspire their team and followers through their commitment to their wellbeing and building relationships in community settings (Castellanos, 2018). The implication is that servant leaders like servant leaders, charismatic leaders are motivational, upbeat, and exciting to their followers.

Comparison to Transformational Leadership Model

The transformational leadership model is one of the most priced leadership styles because of its benefits to healthcare teams and organizations. At the core of transformational leadership is change and inspiring followers to adopt different ways of doing things. Transformational leaders want their followers to do better than them in the future by leveraging their abilities and implementing change models, especially innovative and creative models. Transformational leaders do not like the status quo. As such, like charismatic leaders, transformational leaders use their positions to inspire and motivate employees and followers to attain set goals. The only difference is that charismatic leaders can attain change using existing structures but transformational leaders believe in changes to align with the organizational needs and its competencies based on patient demands (Castellanos, 2018). Transformational leaders, like charismatic leaders, have a vision for change and motivate their teams to go beyond the expected, improve their sense of importance and value of their tasks and responsibilities. The implication is that both transformational and charismatic leadership are essential in healthcare settings, especially for nurse leaders.

Comparison to Visionary Leadership Model

Visionary leaders use their vision to get teams and followers to accept their ideas and approaches to doing things. Visionary leaders develop visionary goals and inspire others to attain them. As such, visionary leadership styles share similarities with charismatic leadership as they use their attributes to help their team attain set goals and objectives (Benjamin, 2020). Charismatic leaders sell visions to themselves and allow followers to accept and follow them to attain them. Visionary leadership is directive leadership that focuses on the attainment of set goals. Imperatively, visionary leaders have the impulsion to attain their goals, just like charismatic leaders who inspire their teams to have one purpose.

Personal Model in Employing Effective Strategies to Lead Diverse Teams

The charismatic leadership model is an effective style of leadership that allows practitioners in the healthcare environment to lead diverse teams and foster interdisciplinary collaborations, especially when implementing their leadership projects. The increasing diversity in the population implores leaders to focus on the development of effective skills, especially people-focused skills and attributes, to attain set organizational goals and objectives. The leadership model prepares me to employ effective strategies like better communication, articulation, tapping into people’s emotions, and crafting a clear vision for the team based on common goals and aspirations (Castellanos, 2018). The model also allows me to show intense commitment to work and evoke emotions from the teams and followers to attain set goals.

The healthcare environment is diverse with professionals in different specialties yet expected to deliver common treatment goals or interventions. Interdisciplinary collaboration is a core aspect of the effective delivery of healthcare services to a different population. Imperatively, the charismatic leadership model is essential as it prepares me to embrace diversity, show humility and influence others through my communication skills (Luu et al., 2019). The model emphasizes the need for a leader to recognize others’ contributions and be a role model in behavioral change to attain confidence and trust among the followers and teams.

Part B: Personal Worldview

My worldview is influenced by a host of aspects that include religious, spiritual, and cultural elements that have shaped my philosophy of practice. I believe that nursing is a calling to serve others and restore health, hope, confidence, and the love of life as given by God. My worldview is based on Christian teachings of unconditional love for humanity and service to God. As a Christian, I have to do good to others as a way of showing love. I believe that patients have inherent dignity and value, irrespective of their conditions and vulnerabilities. Therefore, healthcare providers like nurses should treat them equally regardless of one’s socio-economic situation.

My cultural beliefs border on multiculturalism, accommodation, and appreciation of diversity in population and even in practice settings. I believe that people should be given a chance to participate and offer their opinions, regardless of their status. My philosophy is that nurses should serve people in their different and most desperate needs to restore hope in the world. As nurses, we have to be charismatic with patients, their families, and populations because of the trust and belief that they have entrusted in our duties and responsibility (Castellanos, 2018). My attitude towards leadership is that it is about serving and being there to listen to the concerns and needs of others. Leaders are exceptional and given the responsibility by others because they trust in them, to provide inspiration and hope.

Professional Leadership Inspiring Others

Professional leadership conduct that can inspire colleagues is building community through relationships. A leader can effectively inspire followers when they truly know their behaviors and nature through building relationships. A leader should also model what is good, demonstrate effective self-awareness, and have high levels of communication; especially listening to others. Employees and followers need motivation, to feel supported and be challenged and recognized for their efforts. When a leader communicates regularly and effectively, they demonstrate that they have invested in follower and they care about them.

Conclusion

The identification of a leadership model is critical as it determines one’s effectiveness as a leader, especially in nursing and healthcare. Leadership models are essential as they encourage motivation, engagement of employees and followers, and increase the level of commitment and satisfaction in the organization. As a leader, one must focus on positive attributes that enhance relationship-building to inspire and motivate followers to attain set goals and objectives.
