Legislating laws is among the highly effective methods of protecting populations and vulnerable groups. Such laws focus on the general or specific populations. The purpose of this grid is to analyze a health problem that can be addressed through legislation in New Jersey.

Children are a vulnerable population that requires protection from parents, health care providers, and the government. Despite the continued effort to protect children and promote their health, childhood obesity rates continue to rise across the United States. The prevalence varies across states depending on health behaviors, social determinants of health, and interventions that different states apply to control childhood obesity. In New Jersey, childhood obesity cannot be overlooked. Indeed, it is among the health concerns that hamper children’s health and well-being significantly. Health data indicates that New Jersey ranks 22nd in the rate of childhood obesity in the United States and about 13.8% of children between 10-17 years have obesity (Stainton, 2019; State of Childhood Obesity, 2022). Disparities related to race and incomes cause a huge variance in rates among populations. Childhood obesity is a huge risk to children’s productivity, academic performance, and overall health. Besides the inevitable physical health issues, childhood obesity increases children’s vulnerability to substance abuse, chronic diseases, and self-esteem problems (America’s Health Rankings, 2022). The implication is that physical, social, and mental health issues will continue increasing among children if there are no robust measures to control the rising rates. Increased chronic diseases and mental health issues lead to a proportionate increase in hospital visits and health care costs. Hence, policy interventions, advocacy, and other efforts are essential. | ||

Childhood obesity is a multifaceted problem requiring a similar approach. However, planning complexities, finances, and the current obesity rates necessitate different solutions. Among many interventions, banning fast foods advertisement until watershed hours would effectively control the rising childhood obesity rates. Under the same policy, fast food companies should be required to limit unhealthy food promotion to one advert daily. The legislation is the best course for advocacy since it is a rule that companies must follow without fail. Secondly, research indicates children’s cognition and information processing depend on the media and information they regularly consume (Cardoso-Leite et al., 2021). As a result, their perception and attachment to unhealthy food will reduce if they do not consume information promoting fast foods regularly. | ||

Currently 1 in 5 children in the United States struggle with childhood obesity (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2022). The struggle implies financial challenges to families since such children require medication and other forms of support to cope with the illness. Financial projections on health care spending indicate that approximately $173 billion are spent yearly on obesity control (CDC, 2022). Implementing the bill would reduce such spending significantly and ensure the government and stakeholders have adequate money to spend on health promotion programs and technologies. Preventive health programs will get more financial support, which will lead to better health outcomes compared to spending massively on treatments. | ||

As a result, Christians are highly encouraged to promote a world that all humans are inherently valuable and the advantaged populations are empathetic about the needs of the disadvantaged and vulnerable populations. You are required to cite a minimum of three sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years, appropriate for the assignment criteria, and relevant to nursing practice.
