At the core of high reliability organizations (HROs) is the need to reduce and prevent the occurrence of any mistakes or errors. High reliability organizations are companies that operate in complex yet hazardous environments for extended periods but do not record serious adverse incidents or events. However, the occurrence of such events can be disastrous to the organization and stakeholders. The five elements that define HROs are: preoccupation with failure, valuing and practicing resilience, expertise’ deference, high sensitivity to operations, and reluctance to simplify their operations. Preoccupation with failure means that the organizations consider near misses as opportunities to improve their processes and safety measures (Cantu et al., 2020). Practicing resilience allows them to prioritize emergency training for unpredictable situations. Deference to expertise means that organizational leaders must know who in the company possesses specialized knowledge and encourage all people to become experts (Veazie et al., 2019). Reluctance to simplify implies that HROs operate in complex situations and should embrace the complexity of both problems and corresponding solutions. Nuclear power plants and the aviation industry are examples of high reliability organizations since they have zero tolerance to errors as such can lead to devastating and widespread negative effects.

High reliability organizations (HROs) have a positive correlation with quality and safety based on their principles (AHRQ, 2019). For instance, these entities focus on preventing mistakes from occurring in their operations and processes despite the complex and delicate nature of their operations and processes. Nurse administrators can deploy effective models like implementation of changes to enable their organizations become HRO ones by minimization of safety events like falls, medication administration errors, and hospital acquired infections (HAIs). The nurse administrator should implement a collaborative approach and set common goals to attain the expected quality outcomes. The administrator should focus on safety and quality improvement through reduction in susceptibility to adverse events to attain the status of a high reliability organization.
