The Healthcare setting is one of the sectors that have a lot of information to be manipulated and handled. Handling information requires a lot of care to gain and maintain trust with patients and other providers. The implication is that the data has to be correctly handled and with confidentiality. Individuals working with such information have a responsibility to safeguard patients’ personal information (Thapa & Camtepe, 2021). In addition, healthcare organizations also need to put systems and strategies in place that can meet the legal requirements governing the storage of information. The purpose of this paper is to explore a process in my current setting when information might be handled better. In addition, the paper will discuss possible changes that can be made to improve information workflow and persons and processes to involve to accomplish the changes.

The Process Where Information Can be Handled Better
At present, the facility is using electronic health records in the whole facility. Electronic health records were adopted some years back. Therefore, the professionals in the facility can easily share patient information for better patient services. With the most recent integration of other data types such as patient X-ray images and handwritten comments and notes, the patient’s private and confidential information is facing more security threats than ever. Even though the electronic health records are password-protected, therefore only authorized individuals can access the information, threats still exist, such as possible cyber threats like hacking by individuals seeking information for their selfish interest. Even though the current information handling is good, it is imperative to be proactive and be careful of any future damages that can occur if unauthorized individuals manage to intercept the vital information. Therefore, the sending and reception of patient medical data between professionals such as laboratory technologists, physicians, and nurses should be made better through encryption. When the information is encrypted, it becomes difficult to access even if an unauthorized individual manages to intercept it (Abouelmehdi & Khaloufi, 2018).

As indicated earlier, the organization adopted electronic health records some years back. However, various changes can be made to improve information workflow. One of such changes is the standardization of the information flow to ensure there is a rapid response in patient care (Namasudra & Deka, 2021). One area that requires standardization is what happens when a patient phones to request a prescription refill. To improve response, I would recommend a review of the processes of initial call by the patient, documentation, authorization, and script deployment to reduce the number of steps and the individuals who participate in the flow. A possible reduction of the number of individuals and steps involved can improve the information workflow.
The Processes and Individuals to Involve to Make the Changes
Improving information workflow on a prescription refill will need the involvement of various processes and individuals for it to be successful. The process includes the original phone call by the patient and documentation (Namasudra & Deka, 2021). The other processes to involve and make adjustments include request authorization and script deployment. Some of the individuals to involve include nurse informaticists, pharmacists, nurses, and physicians. The nurse informaticists will be key in bringing valuable technical expertise and advice on which process and individuals to eliminate from the process but still make the process a success.

In conclusion, information sharing and handling in healthcare settings is key to ensuring that patients and staff are satisfied. Therefore, it is important that healthcare organizations put mechanisms in place to foster the process of information handling. In addition, it is the responsibility of every employee to ensure that information is handled according to the standards and necessary changes made to improve information workflow.
